Critic Reviews

  1. A completely appealing, beautifully preserved memory piece - a grand, colorful coming-of-age story with a candy box color palette and a standout performance by Renée Zellweger. It's a great story and a great crowd-pleaser.
  2. 88
This is essentially Renee Zellweger's picture, and she glows in it.
  3. Peter's lightning-fast script and Loncraine's steady direction steer this road picture to the sunny side of the street.
  4. 75
It's affable entertainment -- a road movie with a smart map and characters who are unpredictable human beings, not just billboard attractions.
  5. 70
The ensemble collectively displays crisp comic timing throughout.
  6. Chief among the movie's charms are Ms. Zellweger, Mr. Rendall--whose would-be actor Robbie is a dab hand at embroidery and accessorizing his stepmother--and Mr. Lerman, who plays George as a bookish adolescent with dreams of becoming a writer.
  7. 70
Sweet, modest and quietly classy, it's the perfect late-summer entertainment -- and it also happens to feature the most relaxed and nuanced performance Renée Zellweger has given in years.
  8. A good-natured screwball road film.
  9. A weightless movie as cheerily artificial as the Old Navy pitchman's bronze skin tones.

My One and Only has an old-fashioned sensibility -- and some lovely Mad Men-style costumes -- making for a pleasantly diverting road movie.

My One and Only isn't exactly memorable, but this little, personable movie is a fine showcase for Zellweger's talents and a paean to the sort of mid-1950s America best remembered in Norman Rockwell paintings.
  12. If you have any curiosity at all about how a fellow like George Hamilton became a fellow like George Hamilton, My One and Only answers the question by looking, fondly, at his primary caregiver.
  13. If there's a prevailing problem with director Richard Loncraine's bit of period fluff, it's that many of the characters encountered along the way are a touch too cartoonish to resonate meaningfully with audiences.

If this movie were in a foreign language, critics would be praising it for its gentle humor, wonderful character roles and Renee If this movie were in a foreign language, critics would be praising it for its gentle humor, wonderful character roles and Renee Zellweger's perfect portrayal of a woman coming to realize her inner strengths. Because it is American, most will fail to realize how brilliantly each role is portrayed and how very satisfying and insightful this look at 50's Americana really is. Full Review »
