  1. Extraordinary labor of love.
  2. A great experience, precisely because it's so intimate and unguarded.
  3. There is no denying the passion or intelligence of this work, which is meant to be an encouragement to explore the films for ourselves rather than a dry history lesson. On that level, "Viaggio" fully succeeds.

Scorsese's heartfelt love letter to Italian movies up to 1961.

For most people, four hours pushes the outer comfort limits for theatrical viewing. My Voyage to Italy is well worth the time, but bringing along a thermos of espresso isn't a bad idea either.
  6. An excellent guide to some of the highlights of post-World War II Italian cinema.
