LarryS.Jan 23, 20042A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. A very poor western. Costner clearly is not a director and let's face it his acting ability has always been limited. Duvall who is a wonderful actor was embarrasing as he is miscast in the role. Kind of sad to see this portly old actor try to pull off a role as a tough cowboy. Yikes!

MichaelK.Jan 24, 20042A pathetic story, full of cliches and totally lacking in reality. Great vistas and a good cast couldn't save this lame horse opera.

RolloT.Aug 18, 20032Bloated and underwhelming western. Costner has never been blander. Without the violence, this could an episode of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". Do yourself a favor and rent Eastwood's "Unforgiven" instead of seeing this move in a theater.

90There's a lot in this movie, simple, big, small and exciting. It's the year's first serious contender for big prizes. What's not to like about this picture?
-
40Mr. Costner's relentless, root-canal humorlessness turns what might have been an enjoyable B-picture throwback into a ponderous drag.
-
80It's a fine, old-fashioned 2 1/4 hours at the Bijou.
