Two-thirds of the way through this movie was working. It really was. Then Costner was turned loose with his Aw-Shucks-I'm-just-a-gentle-caring-man-in-a-world-of-sexual-predators act. He's also a vicious killer with a conscience. Yea right. Like the stereotypes he guns down deserve a second thought. Like the stereotypes he guns down deserve a second thought. Duvall & Bening tried, but Costner's Dances-With-Dorks character is increasingly more than I can stand. This is a parody of Unforgiven pretending to merit being taken seriously. Oh Kevin Kevin, what to do with you? Expand

A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. A very poor western. Costner clearly is not a director and let's face it his acting ability has always been limited. Duvall who is a wonderful actor was embarrasing as he is miscast in the role. Kind of sad to see this portly old actor try to pull off a role as a tough cowboy. Yikes!

A pathetic story, full of cliches and totally lacking in reality. Great vistas and a good cast couldn't save this lame horse opera.

Bloated and underwhelming western. Costner has never been blander. Without the violence, this could an episode of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". Do yourself a favor and rent Eastwood's "Unforgiven" instead of seeing this move in a theater.

The lead character in this movie is named Blue Bonnet. Need I say more? Yes, it seems I do, because people like Nathan L. are still giving this movie 10's. Nathan, you could make a great infomercial host or telemarketer someday, but please refrain from giving reviews in the future, because someone might actually read it and rent this movie. All the lines delivered in this film sound forced and cliched, which is made worse by the fact that 99.9% of this movie is talking. Apparently, Costner thinks growing wierd looking facial hair and saying things like "lets russle up some grub" makes him a hardcore cowboy. This could have been a pretty good 20 minute movie, but where Costner made his directing mistake was in adding the additional 115 minutes. This movie should come with a warning saying "fast forward button required" Expand

  1. There's a lot in this movie, simple, big, small and exciting. It's the year's first serious contender for big prizes. What's not to like about this picture?
  2. Mr. Costner's relentless, root-canal humorlessness turns what might have been an enjoyable B-picture throwback into a ponderous drag.
  3. It's a fine, old-fashioned 2 1/4 hours at the Bijou.
