Shot for next to nothing, Buck's film features some lovely cinematography, two strong performances from newcomers Monda and Kelly, and a funny bit by Nancy Daly as Roberta's sweet 'n' sour boss.
  2. A skillfully observed but never quite satisfying lesbian romantic drama.
  3. Often grating in its presentation.
  4. Manages to look very good for its limitations, and features solid actors doing their best with a very sketchy script.
  5. Serious, competent and unsurprising debut film.

In a major miscalculation, writer-director Jeanette L. Buck has underwritten Micki [the protagonist], making her so mysteriously sullen and distant that audiences may feel violently alienated.

There are many dramatic possibilities in an interracial lesbian romance set in a provincial town, but Out of Season focuses on the women's fears of commitment, which would be fine - even refreshing - if they seemed to, well, like each other or something.
