Shot for next to nothing, Buck's film features some lovely cinematography, two strong performances from newcomers Monda and Kelly, and a funny bit by Nancy Daly as Roberta's sweet 'n' sour boss.
  2. Serious, competent and unsurprising debut film.
  3. Often grating in its presentation.
  4. A skillfully observed but never quite satisfying lesbian romantic drama.
  5. Manages to look very good for its limitations, and features solid actors doing their best with a very sketchy script.
  6. Reviewed by: Chuck Wilson
In a major miscalculation, writer-director Jeanette L. Buck has underwritten Micki [the protagonist], making her so mysteriously sullen and distant that audiences may feel violently alienated.

There are many dramatic possibilities in an interracial lesbian romance set in a provincial town, but Out of Season focuses on the women's fears of commitment, which would be fine - even refreshing - if they seemed to, well, like each other or something.
