A dynamite ensemble cast and a truckload of heart keep the sentimental new comedy POMS from crumbling beneath multiple well-thumbed clichés including (but not limited to) plucky underdogs can triumph, friends are really important and life is short so live it fully.
Poms is strongest when basking in the infectious enthusiasm of its cast. Keaton and Weaver could have easily phoned in their performances, but they do look like they’re having fun together with their crew of Golden Girls.

This movie is great. It's weird and funny and Diane Keaton is amazing in it and there's not another movie like it at all, just not even close. Some of these reviews say it's cliche but they're getting distracted by the few normal things about it that are there to help the medicine go down, it's just a great, weird, subtle movie. If you want to see a fun movie that's not like other movies, this is it.

It’s the witless script by Shane Atkinson and the petrified direction by Zara Hayes that lands everyone in traction.
The feature’s heart is in the right place, especially in advocating that age shouldn’t be a barrier. But Poms is a by-the-numbers feature which couples its empowering message with routine gags and muddled conflict.
Overall, Poms isn’t a film that demands the audience’s attention — and that’s a shame given the breadth of skilled, seasoned talent involved. The blueprint for a genuinely inspired, warm-hearted dramedy is indeed there, it’s just that the filmmakers can’t figure out how to properly utilize what they have.
The film, directed by Zara Hayes and co-written by Hayes and Shane Atkinson, is an abject mess, a movie so poorly built it feels like every other scene is missing—as if after production was wrapped and the movie was in the can, some PA found boxes marked "character" and "plot" in a storage room and realized they forgot to use them during production.
An uncomfortable blend of sickness and silliness, this dancing-past-the-graveyard comedy suggests that the many travails of aging can be endured if you only gather enough friends and surrender enough dignity.

1)Well...I like old people, especially old actresses. In this movie they get good parts, and I have to forgive the movie. 2) I haven’t seen Veronica Cartwright in ages, and she’s still so wonderful! Also, I like Diane Keaton better as a crank than a ditz.
3) I think it had 2 or 3 honestly funny bits, and it had a good heart. Bad-
1)Was there a cliche of the old people comedy that they skipped? I don’t think so. Was it a story built from an algorithm? For sure.
2) Rhea Perlman? Wasted. Pam Grier? Wasted.

There have been numerous documentaries and narrative films about seniors doing something unexpected or untraditional for their age. This time, Diane Keaton moves from NYC to a retirement community in Georgia, where she disrupts things by forming a cheerleading group (including Jacki Weaver, Pam Grier & Rhea Perlman). The concept is certainly not inspiring or original. What makes it even more dreary is that none of the characters are especially endearing or sufficiently quirky to make it fun. Top that off with bland writing. There may be some appeal to women above 50, who might relate to the situations and appreciate the empowerment message. Otherwise, it’s a painfully predictable, lackluster endeavor.
