For the life of me I can't place my finger on why this movie was so damn funny. It seemed to have such serious themes but played it out in such a masterful way as to make you laugh and think at the same time. This is one of the movie greats. I'm surprised more "Professional" critics didn't give it higher ratings. They have been disappointing of late to say the least. Just look at the critic scores verses the viewers. They are out of touch to put it politely. I give this movie a ten because honestly I couldn't find a flaw in the movie. And on top of it all it had a style the was totally original, and that's hard to do these days living in a nothing new under the sun society. Kudos for all Invovled in this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone with more than a few brain cells rattling up there in the old noggin. Expand

Maybe this is my new favorite movie. Only time will tell. I haven't seen a movie this compassionate, fascinating, and so emotionally powerful in a long time, though. In watching it, I was reminded of a quote by Pauline Kael, who said she could tell immediately whether she and someone could potentially be friends based on the movies the person liked. If you don't like this movie, it doesn't mean something's wrong with you. It just means you and I could never be friends, because this movie was a piece of work, borne straight out of the heart, and most likely if you don't like it, it's because you can't personally identify with the events described. It's the most hopeful movie I've seen in years. Expand

I LOVED this movie. it was touching; it was romantic; it made me laugh and cry. it was everything a movie should be. INCLUDING excellent performances by all the actors and an astounding sound track.

Unfunny, unfocussed, unbelievable that it could get made.

One of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. Well written, nicely executed, and commendable acting made this a very touching story. I gave it a 7 simply because though it was labeled a comedy, I really thought this was more of a satirical drama. Still though, a very deep movie that works on many levels. Nice to see a movie with this kind of depth in a world of superficial "cradle 2 the grave" crap. Expand

A strange movie, that mixes satire and moralistic drama. In it's satire it works quite well, similar in tone to Wet Hot American Summer. But it then also has the dramatic, emotional romance that it tries to mix into the rest of the film. Sometimes the balance works great, but others it just spoils the tone. It's as if American Psycho and Pride and Prejudice were edited together. I feel like it compares a lot to the movie Saved, which came out a couple of years after Pumpkin. I feel works a lot better, it mixes comedy with romantic drama a lot more fluently in a similar elitist-school setting, and I just wish Pumpkin didn't have to be quite so heavy-handed in it's moralistic journey. The film doesn't seem to know how it feels, much less how others are supposed to feel about it.

I laughed harder at Pumpkin than at any other film I've seen this year -- but be warned: This dark campus comedy is not for all tastes, or probably even most tastes.

Off sorority row, the movie goes flat for increasingly long stretches, with the filmmakers displaying so little understanding of or genuine feeling for the mentally challenged that they never advance past stutter-and-stumble humor.
