As a developer, this tied together a log of information about free software and open source to which I had been exposed over the years, making it all coherent. The interviews with Stallmann were particularly helpful.

REVOLUTION OS plays like a concert film shot by a member of the band. I don't know to what extent, if at all, Moore is involved with the Linux community. But the film is organized around the premise that its subject is inherently interesting. It proceeds to throw lots of computer jargon at the viewer, from a lot of very knowledgeable talking heads who can't explain themselves very well to a layman like myself. (One exception to this rule: they all made it very clear that they are NOT communists.) The film fails to explain its subject cinematically. Its use of widescreen is negligible, its attempted stylistic touches (fast motion on the super-highway!) frankly embarrassing. Whatever the virtues of the men and the topic profiled, the REVOLUTION is shoddily televised. Expand

  1. Ultimately, the film amounts to being lectured to by tech-geeks, if you're up for that sort of thing.
  2. Confident that his subject matter is inherently scintillating, however, Moore lays it out in creakily dry fashion. Those who consider computers to be glorified word processors may find their eyes glazing over in a matter of minutes.

A great film and an important one.
