The surprise is how utterly original his (Woodley's) gorgeously mounted curiosity seems.
  2. For all its visual zaniness and its aura of psychic imbalance, the movie, which won the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, stays on the surface and never locates its own heart of darkness.
  3. There are some good ideas buried beneath the grotesque whimsy, and several animated sequences are modestly clever. But Pitt's mannered performance will inspire nothing but a run to the video store, in search of a real Burton.
  4. Oddly bereft of scares or tension, the film is mainly notable for its sustained atmosphere of weirdness.
