Like "Jerry Maguire", "Salt" could have been the usual blockbuster with a obvious script/formula if it wasn't for Angelina Jolie's surprisingly good performance.

One of the worst movies I've seen in years. The film doesn't take itself seriously, and doesn't expect the audience to - unfortunately it is so absurd, poorly written, and poorly executed that I feel insulted this made it the screen. Save yourself the money, don't see this. The underlying plot felt as though it had potential, but the end product is a rushed mess of a film. One of the worst displays of direction of any action film in the past 10 years. Expand

With all due respect to James Bond, Evelyn Salt(Angelina Jolie) does it better, at least since, incidentally, Lewis Gilbert's "The Spy Who Loved Me", made in 1977, when the Cold War was still cold; when the Russians, by far, made the best villains. For those who can remember, "Salt" makes you nostalgic for the days when the ABC telefilm "The Day After" scared you silly. The "evil empire"(Ronald Reagan's words) was good for the action-thriller genre. Islamic fundamentalism? Not so much. The Arabic language, and more importantly, the Arabic accent, have little or no entertainment value, no camp kick(i.e. Nazi Germany), at all. That's why Jonathan Demme's retooling of John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate" will never work on the level of escapism, even if the United States someday makes peace with the Muslim world. Russians are more fun: that's the masterstroke of "Salt". The Russians still have active sleeper agents; the Russians still hate our guts(who knew?), a whopping nineteen years after the Soviet Union dissolved following the signing of the Belavezha Accords. For clarity's sake, the expository scenes that show the Russian children's training could have been more explicit in naming names. "Salt" never makes mention of that magic acronym(the U.S.S.R.), even though Orlov(Daniel Olbrychski) is a communist hardliner who still pledges allegiance to the hammer and sickle. The old school commie, a colleague of Brezhnev, is no doubt bitter about losing the Cold War, so "Salt" should have followed through with its bizarre retro choice in antagonists and made "Day X" less convoluted day of reckoning against the United States by being more pointed in their motivation. This splinter group, who as children resented Mikahl Gorbachev's employment of Glasnost to draw back the Iron Curtain, hates Americans every bit as much as the Muslims. That's the note that the filmmaker should have expounded on. Lest we forget, as an afterthought, "Salt" makes room for our current enemy when the final stage of "Day X" is revealed; that's when "Salt" becomes certifiably loony. But then, Jolie, in a scene reminiscent of Jack Ruby gunning down Lee Harvey Oswald in cold blood on live TV, reins in the overplotting with the sheer force of her presence, proving that it's she, and not Bond, or Bourne, who is the best. (Apologies to Carly Simon.) "Salt" is an inspired popcorn flick. Expand

I don't understand the low ratings some movies get because for my money this was the best of it's kind this year. I'm not a Jolie fan, like anything with DiCaprio and a couple of others their name makes me think twice before going to see any movie they're in. But she did a great job here with a story that could have been far worse than any 24 script. The sleeper premise is far-fetched but if you can get past that it's a very entertaining film with more going for it than stunts and action. But since it's a summer movie there is plenty of both. I guess we need a break from reality and a trip back to the bad old Cold War days was almost a relief. I saw lots of happy faces leaving the theater after this one. Expand

The entire movie builds up to the final twist ending that offers very little payoff. The movie is simply not enjoyable. It started out promising, and had the potential to be so much more, but really falls short. It has a few decent scenes, but it's definitely not worth your time.

Don't give me wrong, this movie had a lot of action. But it was a little bit confusing and kinda ridiculous. For a minute, she's a Russian, then she's the good guy and all the way around. It's that kind of movie that you don't want to see again. The only fun part of the film were the actions scenes. The rest was non-sense crap.

This is my first review for metacritic, so I'm sorry it's negative. This movie made me feel old.. In the first 40 minutes I wondered what the point of all this running about shouting was. It all just seemed a bit silly and pointless. In fact, frighteningly it reminded me of a Bruckheimer film where running about, shouting, leaping onto and off things with lots of explosions and impossibly gorgeous women are stock in trade. Although I have never been a Jolie fan particularly, I kind of thought she was respected as a serious actress. Here, she looks like Megan Fox's auntie. This movie may have salt but I guess I was looking for a little balsamic dressing. Expand

The more we run, the more they chase. It is what happenned to Evelyn Salt. Since Mat Damon BOURNE IDENTITY (2002) which is using more advance believability approach in runaway espionage tale, now everybody wants to be Bourne by running, jumping, shooting, fighting, car-chase, motorcycle-chase, you-name-it and it all happenned in one action-packed. Couple examples which using the similar patterns are: John Travolta FROM PARIS WITH LOVE (2009), Tom Cruise KNIGHT AND DAY (2010), Ashton Kutcher KILLERS (2010) and now it is Jolie turn. The story follows Evelyn Salt (Jolie) who has been instant-accused as a Russian spy who may be able to jeopardizing the national security. The Director is Phillip Noyce, the man behind THE BONE COLLECTOR in 1999 (also with Jolie). The camera angle is dynamic, especially in action sequences. Yes, the movie is full of twists and turns, even sometimes the story just go by itself without proper explanations, leaving too many questions and missing links. That is the uniqueness of the plots! The story is intriguing. It is successful to make us stay put in our seat by expecting what is going to happen next. To let Jolie fuses into action adventure like thiz is like releasing the fish into water, it is what she does best. Jolie is still the focus, shines among her mysterious partner (Liev Schreiber) and plain-straight boss (Chiwetel Eijiofor). If someone complains about how absurd thiz narratives has become, it is simply arguable and it all happens to every modern action movies. One thing for sure, Jolie is back with some kiss-ass moves, to show us she is definitely one of the most comfortable action heroines in our time. Thiz SALT is happened to be sweet more than you think it is. Visit My Blog on JONNY'S MOVEE on : http://jonnyfendi.blogspot.com Expand

It's true. I'm an Angelina Jolie fan for all the wrong reasons. For my taste, she is at her best playing an action heroine and oozing sexuality. Make it a spy thriller and you can pretty much bet that I'll be first in line. In my opinion, there are two ways to evaluate any film. You can consider its technical elements and the precision of its actors, or you can just ask yourself if you enjoyed it. Well, I'm going with the latter this time, and I enjoyed the hell out of Salt. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that the film is a spy thriller with lots of double crossing. In fact, the story is quite outlandish and barely even believable (okay, I lied, it's really not believable at all). But it's FUN. It keeps you guessing and rooting for the bad guy, or good girl, or whatever you want to classify Jolie's character as. She plays a spy who is suddenly outed as an undercover Russian agent when a very wanted Russian bad guy claims that she will soon kill the Russian President during his upcoming trip to America. That makes sense, right? Don't worry about it. Trust me. It will. And even if it doesn't, you won't care because it will be too loud and there will be too many explosions for you to remember what was supposed to happen anyway. Salt is a thrill-ride. It's pure crazy fun and Jolie does a decent job of trying to keep it together. But with three versions offering three separate endings on the DVD, this is one you can watch over and over and still get a kick out of every time. You might need to suspend reality just a tad when viewing it, and have something to wipe away the drool, but it will be worth it. Expand

Non-stop action, good twists, and Angelina Jolie. What more could you want. The action was great, plot was average/above average, and their can be potential sequels. If the director just touches up on a few things, this could be the next BOURNE series. Except this won't bore you to death, and you can see Angelina kicking bad guy ass.

One of the reasons movies are made is to twist reality into how we would like things to be. I'm tired of these critics who are so myopic in their own thinking that they forget why movies are made in the first place. I loved Salt. I gave it a nine. She represents an I don't give a damn attitude and most of the people she slams makes your day a little better. Move over boys, Jolie’s in town and she’s taking over! In a time where chauvinists still like to yell the loudest, Jolie proves just how antiquated their ideas truly are. She joins the 'Good Old Boys' and beats them at their own game. In a movie that moves nonstop with a villain that hasn't been seen in a while…long enough to become fresh once again and quite believable given the current spy game going on between the US and Russia. Angelina gives us a hero who's more than a bit dirty, one we can almost relate to. Sure some of the stunts may have been fantastical, but so where Bond's, Bourne's and Hunt’s. They weren't penalized for using them and neither should she. I give Salt two thumbs up for keeping me engrossed, intrigued and guessing. Expand

Overall a great ride. If you go into this expecting Angelina Jolie in the middle of lots of explosions, chases, and action in general with not much of a plot then you'll be happy. If you go into this expecting the likes of T2, or the Bourne legacy (action movies that ask you to think or invest a bit more in the characters) then you will not find what you're looking for. To those critics who say this movie isn't believable, I have one thing to say: Duh! When was the last time that you saw an action movie that was actually believable, if you wanted to look at it that way, or if you really thought about it? Action movies are famous for people surviving things that in real life would have them splattered all over. /rant. So, what is this movie? It's a he-- of a good time is what it is! I was continually having fun watching and wondering, what on earth is she going to do NEXT? And whatever I imagined was invariably topped by what happened in the movie. Invariably. It was amazing to watch, all of the acting was good, what more do you want from a movie like this? Expand

As for all the supposed holes in the plot, there are no more than one would find in any film about a diabolical plot to conquer the world. This movie was pretty terrible because of the poor directing, emotionless script and lack of logic. There's too many quick camera cuts to make the movie feel somewhat believable but it fails. The Batman and Bourne movies made more sense because they were well directed. This movie just made me go WTF a bunch of times then I left the movie feeling really disappointed. Salt allowed me to suspend my critical mind, an incredible feat since I grew up in Studio City and am a writer myself. Angelina is so damn GOOD that none of it matters, though. Her acting is great between actions scenes that she dives into with aplomb and a vitality that makes your jaw drop knowing she did all the stunts and fights herself. It doesn't hurt one bit that she's also one of the most perfect genetic productions of human evolution (beautiful!) ever to walk the planet. Angie has a look on her face in fights that's both spooky and genuine, and her moves would make both a black belt and a mother mountain lion proud. Loved it! Expand

Phillip Noyce, Kurt Wimmer and Brian Hegeland's "SALT" was one of the year's most hotly anticipated films everywhere you looked you saw the promotions for this slick and over-the-top action thriller from director Phillip Noyce(Rabbit Proof-Fence, The Quiet American), screen play writers Brian Hegeland(L.A. Confidential, Robin Hood) and Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Law Abiding Citizen). "SALT" is a kind of ripped form the headlines type of action thriller seeing as it is taking its main plot and premise from a news story about a women who accused of being a Russian spy. "SALT" is a standard order thriller with amazing action sequences and death defying stunts the only thing that sets this film apart from other action movies is the fact that it has a seasoned and highly professional star in the lead role, a veteran action director who knows his way around action sequences and conspiracy thrillers. But the plot to this movie seems to be mired in an over abundance of action sequences and chase sequences and to add on top of all that the film clocks out at a measly 1hr. 39 min which leaves little for character development or story development but truth be told does a movie like this really need all that? I don't think so. This film is more reliant on its action, stunts, chases, and Angelina Jolie's excellent performance as Evelyn Salt. This film has so many plot holes that you could drive a semi truck through it is the epitome of over the top action with each and every sequence delivering one brilliant filmed yet outrageously implausible stunt after another. All the while, the audience is sitting there in awe at the stylish and gritty action that laid out for the audience. "SALT†is a work of technological mastery, sharp writing and fine acting all combined together to create a thriller that is just as effective as it is daring. I am not a very opinionated person. Grant it I do have strong political views but there very muted because the people around me do not feel as strongly as I do about politics. "SALT" has strong political overtones that almost muted by the constant action, albeit the political notions expressed in this film are nothing new to moviegoers. Truth be told we have all seen something like this before but it is rarely done on such a level as it is done in "SALT.†Its over the top, boundlessly energetic, intelligent, thrilling and absolutely absorbing the way this film is able to grab your attention from the get go is just amazing your attention does not stray for a minute you are completely involved in the story, the plot and the mission that Salt must go on. I will admit that this movie has holes in its plot and its story and at times the short running time does not give the audiences enough time to really truly get to know the characters then again whenever did you care about the characters in an action movie? It's all about the action things blowing up people getting blown up the hero round house kicking a bad guy out a window or through a door you don't want to think while your watching an action movie, you don't want some kind of philosophical message inserted into your film you want action! Adventure! Big explosions!! If you crave all those things and more than this movie is the right movie for you with enough intelligence in its action and its dialogue to keep it from sinking to the level of Transformers: Revenge of the stupid. "SALT†is one of the best action films of the years and personally one of the best action thrillers I have seen in a very long time. It has its head in the right place and does not over use the action to burn up time on screen like Michael Bay did with his horrendous money making train wreck "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". This film has a brain and it uses it mind you this film does not do allot of deep thinking but the amount of thinking it does is just enough to keep this action/conspiracy thriller a success. "SALT†I can assure you will not win over very many people in fact it may turn people off form seeing it. Seeing as films like this have been made many, many, many times before the only saving graces in this film is how outrageously entertaining and exciting it is lets not forget Angelina Jolie she helps save this film more than anyone else. Thanks to in part to her massive star power and her skills as both an action star and an actress she brings this film status from seen it to must see. "SALT" is one of the most enjoyable and most entertaining films to come out this year and a true testament of how a women can do anything a man can do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A decent action spy movie with an ultra-capable female heroine somewhere between Bourne and (closer to) Nikita with an outrageous story involving the assassination of Russian AND American president and starting a WW III with nuclear strikes on Iran and Mecca. Leave your brain at the entrance and, if you like this kind of fare and you are willing to suspend your disbelief, you will have fun. Final assassination is really a sight to behold although with Kurt Wimmer 's script (Equilibrium, Ultraviolet) you must expect some serious close combat badassery verging on supernatural. Expand

It was a high-octane action film that was throughly entertaining. The plot was absurd at times, but the cast makes it intruiging enough for you to invest on all the B.S. happenning, especially Angelina Jolie. She is great as always, and she really owns the character of Evelyn Salt. A 7.5/10.

The movie..2 hours long..felt like it was a 30 minute show you usually see on tv. Not saying not to see it(see it) but this movie was very rushed and now their's going to be a second movie based on the ending of her running away from the cops. So waste your money on that exactly what these producers planned to do. Expand

Jolie is oustanding and the action is passable, but overall, Salt is an amplified action thriller trying so hard to be something more profound that it does end up being trying indeed.

Sit down and enjoy the ride, ask questions later. Absurd plot, average dialogue, but some really great action, especially when in cinema. Jolie is good, just like Liev Schreiber, who plays just as big as a role as his female counterpart. Looking forward to Salt 2.

Oh, to return to the old school spy-action flicks, the ones full of Manchurian candidates, talking computers, secret bunkers, nuclear bombs, fake deaths brought on by the venom of exotic spiders, and bad guys we can mostly understand and hate without reservation. "Salt" is a throwback to the Col War era, and perhaps even further, and the fact that it purportedly takes place in the present day is just the beginning of its ridiculous notions that director Philip Noyce asks the audience to swallow. But he asks so nicely, you'll find yourself willing and able, for the most part. "Salt" is, for the most part, one extended chase scene. One of its glories is that nobody slows down to explain anything; this is just as well, because the explanations likely wouldn't make any sense anyway. Angelina Jolie is the titular character, a CIA operative/loving wife who is on her way home for her anniversary dinner when a grizzled Russian (Daniel Olbrychski) appears and accused her of being a Russian sleeper agent. She blows him off, he kills a few guards in an elevator (knives in his shoes somehow didn't set off the metal detector at the front door) and then she bolts. Is she a Russian spy, or is she just afraid for her husband's life? If you're really asking that question, you're thinking too much and missing the point of this movie. CIA agents Chiwetl Ejiofor and Liev Schrieber give chase. By the way, Ejiofor and Schrieber are both award-winning Shakespearean actors. This may or may not have something do with their ability to catch up with Angelina Jolie. Sometimes "Salt" operates like a Bourne film, though it never feels as smart. Jason Bourne was certainly a fine fighter, but what made those movies so much fun was his "MacGyver" side--he could kill you with a ballpoint pen. Aside from one stunt involving a fire extinguisher and a talent for shoplifting, Salt, well, she just kills people, primarily security guards standing in hallways and outside doors who seem to have absolutely no notion that someone is likely to fall out of the ceiling panels and karate chop them to death. You gotta feel sorry for these guys; they seem to think they're Maytag repairmen. This summer has been filled with movies in which the actors seem to be having more fun than the audience. "Grown Ups" wasn't funny, but the actors were having a grand old reunion; "The A-Team" seemed downright smug about how preposterous its stunts were. "Salt" is just as big and dumb as those films, but what sets it apart is that it truly seems to be about its business; that is, entertaining the audience. No smirks in this one. What a relief. Jolie has attempted in the past few years to make serious movies that win awards ("Changeling," "A Mighty Heart") but hasn't had much success. There are plenty of actors and actresses whom I wish would get more serious about their craft (I don't think I'll ever forgive Anne Hathaway for following "Rachel Getting Married" with "Bride Wars"Â) but Angelina Jolie isn't one of them. She has a feline grace that needs to be exhibited in action movies like this one. Perhaps the greatest achievement of "Salt" is that it manages to show off Angelina Jolie without showing off her, um, assets. There is one brief and very unsexy scene at the beginning in which she is tortured in her underwear; aside from that, she stays very sensibly dressed. And yet the screen is dominated by the way she moves, the confidence in her gait and manner, the way she looks as she kicks ass and takes names. This is what an action hero is supposed to look like. Jolie is an actress of remarkable physicality; it's nice that we can finally separate concept that from sexuality, which is a different thing altogether. Expand

Let me just start off by saying that the trailers for Salt do it absolutely no justice and make it look like the most generic of forgotten identity action movies. Salt is much more than that. Due to seeing that trailer around 50 times, my expectations were deflated but truthfully those expectations were never very high. I sat and watched as every minute my negative thoughts for this movie before I saw it were washed away and I became immersed in the action. If you are like me and were close to writing it off as garbage, think again. Salt stars Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a – you know what I have absolutely no idea what she actually is – I’m going to say CIA agent, who has a leader of a Russian youth army come to see her at the CIA’s office which is disguised as a petroleum company of course. This defector accuses Salt of being a Russian spy, which comes as quite a surprise to her boss Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber) and Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Salt goes on the run from the CIA as they try to haul her in. The thing about this movie is, it has more twists that 25 bags of pretzels. But this is not at all a bad thing. The twists of this movie are done extremely well and credit must go to director Phillip Noyce but especially the writer Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer has previously written Law Abiding Citizen and Street Kings and this really did shine through, as he was able to make this crafty story actually half believable. These twists take us all over the place not knowing whom is actually the good guy and leaving us holding our breath until the next twist, which will inevitably occur. Salt, the character is not likeable in the slightest, mainly because you don’t actually know who she is most of the time. Jolie’s performance is good however in a movie that was originally written for a male lead, and is just as good as any male could be as Salt. Schreiber is admirable as Ted Winter and gives a surprisingly good Russian accent at one point but I struggle to look past how little movement his face has when he talks. It’s weird. And then there is Chiwetel Ejiofor who is good as Peabody. But then again he is good in nearly everything he has ever done, even 2012. All-in-all Salt is one of the twistiest rides you’ll ever go on in a movie theatre, maybe even in a theme park. This does not hurt the film in the slightest and in fact probably covers up some of the flaws it may have had. There are some spectacular scenes that I won’t spoil for you, especially one that takes place in a submarine. The acting is commendable and feeds of the action of this film well. But Salt is made for the action and by golly does it deliver. If you had any doubts about this film from the trailers, take it from me, that doubt is completely misplaced. Salt is the 90-minute action thrill ride this year has needed. By Tom Fortune. Expand

Really enjoyable film. Paced well, flashbacks make sense, motivations are clear, action scenes are not fully believable, but fun none-the-less. Jolie is a splendid actress, Liev Schreiber is a fine actor and the rest of the cast was very good. Many movies suffer from inattentive casting, but this one was spot on. All-in-all, a fun, action-packed great summer diversion.

In Salt, Angelina Jolie plays a character once written for Tom Cruise. If you've read anything about the movie over the course of its multi-month media blitz, you've probably read that. Primarily this tidbit is used for publicity. But to ignore the impact this sex-swap had on the film itself is to miss the importance of Salt as a potential launch pad for a new breed of action heroines. Several action sequences stitched together with a very loose plot to boot. I went into this thinking it would be a watered-down version of the Bourne trilogy. Instead it a murky action movie with a lot of shouting. Don't expect to be excited to priapic proportions.

This was a total "girl power" movie. I didn't like it very much at all, really it could be helped a little with more realism. Like seriously she shouldn't be owning everyone throughout the entire movie.

A film that in the middle makes you to watch the clock all time does not worth the money or the time. I was hoping this movie not to be as bad as most movies this year, at least not boring. But it is. Last half of the movie is stupid, I would have cut the script just in the middle after the church or a bit later.

If you take one of the Bourne movies as the standard for this genre, or possibly earlier conspiracy/espionage films like Day of the Jackal, then this movie is unable to generate a score that is in the upper half of distribution based on quality. All of the attributes necessary for a great conspiracy film - convincing storyline, protagonist with whom to strongly identify, technically amazing yet believable plotting, and energizing action - is missing in this film. Weak characterization, a failure to convincingly make the plot believable, and kind of soulless action in a lot of places. I had to really concentrate to stay engaged, but never was able to. The movie simply doesn't lift the viewer up into the action and story, and I think it is because the nature of the story - an implausible cold war/terrorist cell strategy to destroy the US - isn't all that great. Plus, the movie feels like an origin story - we are basically given a story that will justify 2 more movies later. We learn why Angelina Jolie will ultimately work alone, why she cannot trust anyone except one person in government, and so on. In that sense, maybe the payoff will come in later installments, but this one was a disappointment. What keeps the movie from being a total failure is the brilliant casting. Angelina Jolie, despite looking like thin and emaciated to the point that it harms the story's concept, is perfect. She is beautiful, as always, and has a slightly more Eastern European vibe that is hard to pinpoint but which was great. Her fighting choreographer appears to have made the conscious choice to compensate for her thin frame by having her use objects and closed in spaces to her advantage. Several times she can be seen pushing off from walls before kicking or fighting someone to gain more force, presumably, and in that sense the movie improves upon what would otherwise have been asking too much suspension of disbelief. When you see her leap from a wall into a guard, knocking him unconscious, somehow it seems possible - particularly if you're like me and really don't know much about martial arts and fighting. Liev Schreiber, though, was fantastic. The way he stares at someone is creepy. He also seems like a big man - tall and muscular - which fits his role here as a CIA agent perfectly. He is quiet and reserved in his scenes, but still brings intensity to the action, such as in chase scenes where he comes across as deliberate and calculating. All of the actors are, in fact, fantastic in this film, and if not for them and the direction, the film would be a total mess. But because of them, it lifts it up to what I generously score a 5. For me a 5, in this genre, means that if you are on business travel in your hotel room, and it's late, and the movie comes on, then you should watch it. Expand

Bourne has a lot to answer for, this time its a good thing, as-long as you don't stop to think about what is happening (in which case you will quickly figure it all out) even the plot matches the "top shelf" action which only enters the ridiculous once or twice...

All movies need to be reviewed relative to their prospective audience. If one reviews "White Chicks" for example, one has to be aware of the movie's intended purpose and place in the minds of its audience. With that in mind, even as the archetype summer blockbuster with a shallow plot and enough explosions to run a demolitions company; Salt was deliriously unbelievable verging on the parodistic. There so many better summer movies to see, explosion and shallow plot and everything. Expand

At the very least you can count on Ms Jolie's beauty to get you through a film, right? Sadly as it was with Tomb Raider her looks alone could not do the trick. Instead the close shots of her seemed patronizing with respect to her cardboard acting. Everyone in this film was cut in 2D and I found very little engagement. That's just the acting, the plot and action sequences I thought were even worse. Don't get me wrong, I love suspending my reality for a few hours, but this is best done when they have engaged me in a story where the people's emotions are related to the protagonist's plight. I can turn my brain off like the rest of them and watch a summer popcorn flick and have very little standards in this regards. That said Salt did not even make that mark. I suspect the studio are angling to start this into a franchise ala the Bourne films. Its a predictable money angle based on Jolie's good name (for now). Be warned. Expand

"Salt" may start off with some clunky storytelling, but once the action takes off (which it doesn't take too long to do), it's a senseless joyride, finding a niche between "Bourne"-style realism and "Mission Impossible" inanity (yes, a mask is used at one point in the movie). Of course, the driving force is Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy. Salt is altogether a static character, but shifts in narrative constantly make our view of her dynamic, no knowing whether to pin her as hero or antihero, and Jolie plays this ambiguity to perfection. The movie itself isn't perfect, though - to me, occasional plot holes made it more confusing than "Inception," and the idea of a Cold War carry-over in this day and age is somewhat laughable. Still, the movie plays its thrills right, and character of Salt fulfills what she was written to be - a bona fide action star. Expand

Angelina Jolie in a tailor-made role that strays away from Lara Croft or Mrs. Smith. The film itself is a breath of fresh air and it’s worth the hype. The direction is frayed and the story is at times, slightly perplexing. It is surprising to see how low the rating is when there is a lot of blood and violence. If you want to make an action movie way over the top stop using aging stars a perfect example was Die Hard 4. I read these reviews but some how don't believe it deserves the score. Salt may not be the most original film in terms of its plot, but it is definitely done right for the most part. This is mainly due to Angeline Jolie being such a great strong actress for this kind of film and the movie itself keeps you interested all the way through and may give you a surprise or two in its plot depending on how many films you've seen of this kind, of course.

I'm a fan since Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Changeling, but I felt like I was watching Lara Croft and Fox ("Wanted" movie) expressions. watched the film and loved the action! don't get me wrong, it is a film I would not hesitate to watch again...but... there are some gaps in the plot! what is really the use of the scene where Salt after her release in N.Korea is talking with her husband saying he should have petitioned for her as 'now they know who he is'...we learn that Liv Shreiver's character asked her to get close to the person that became her husband.OK! but if the script was clever enough, they would have used this sub-plot more effectively given what is revealed about Shreiver's character in the end...it does not make sense that Salt's husband is just killed... it is a shame that more thought has not been put into the script. It could have outdone Inception in a compelling film. Still hope they get to make a sequel though. Despite Roger Ebert saying that this film has large enough holes in the plot that you could drive the whole movie through them, metacritic assigned his review a score of 100. Maybe this can give you an idea of why this whale of a film has achieved its metacriic score of 65. Unfortunately there are several problems with this film. The first of those is that it is trying to be too many things to too many people, ultimately failing flat on its face as a result. After wasting two hours of my life watching Salt I still couldn't work out if it was an Action film, a suspense drama, a Cold War alternative ending, a story of death and grief and loss and the ways humans react to these, or a film with smarts and brains... Further hamstringing Jolie's valiant attempts to elevate this film from mediocrity with a determined acting performance is the scripts completely implausible premise and plot, lack of intelligence and utterly underwhelming character development, all of which led me to care little for the outcome of the films central protagonists. In trying to outsmart itself and be too many things to too many people Salt comes off as one of Jolie's more forgettable films in the last few years. Forget the metacritic score of 65 and spend your money on something better. Expand

This was on a par with the Tom Cruise M.I. films. The action was well done. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I simply can't believe the favourable reviews for this derivitive Female-Bourne nonsense. The stunts, fights and set pieces are utterly ludicrous, as is the plot - none of which makes ANY sense if you think about it for more than a minute (an example: we are expected to believe that a woman will watch the man she loves die horribly in order to maintain her 'cover' when she has within her power the ability to take apart methodically the men who are holding him hostage and cover her tracks in the process? Another example: Salt displays Bourne's preternatural foresight, but didn't manage to see ANY of this coming until she was 'activated'/set-up?). Obviously the filmakers have circumvented this by simply not giving the audience an opportunity to think about the plot by freneticly jumping from one death-defying cliff-edge punch-up to another for nearly two hours. This is a film that requires you to simply turn off your brain as we are expected to believe that an anorexic-looking waif of woman can outwit the Russians, the Americans and shoot, karate-chop and punch her way through what, at times, seems like the entire US governmental apparatus, intelligence services and military complex. This film is so over-the-top it's dissappeared into the stratosphere - but not in a good way. Expand

In SALT, the best action thriller of Summer 2010, Angelina Jolie proves her talent in a leading role originally written for a man. As secret agent Evelyn Salt, Jolie builds a character that is fresh, driven, interesting and not overly complex as she moves through steep emotional challenges. In SALT, she is accused of being a Russian double agent and must prove her loyalty to the U.S.A. while spies, government agents and criminal goons threaten at every turn. With abundant plot twists, SALT is just plain fun. Jolie asked for the part and got it, giving her the opportunity to become the quintessential secret agent woman. Not only does she play the genre well, she updates and redefines it in the following ways: - Brave with Heart: There's a dramatic moment in SALT where Jolie has the opportunity to blow away a Russian operative. She chooses not to do so. Moments like these help drive the plot, but also give welcome relief from the endless shootout scenes that fill espionage thrillers. Jolie develops human interest in scenes with her gawky but lovable German husband Mike (August Diehl). - Athletic and Sensuous: Jolie avoids the scantily clad look of James Bond's women. Her physique and stamina are on display, but not exploited. A satisfying array of stunts - most of which she performs herself - can inspire viewers who identify with a brave leading woman. SALT is like the spy film Julia on steroids. Agent Salt runs, leaps, changes her appearance, and gets where she needs to go. Facing life's daily challenges, aren’t we a bit like her? - Street Smart and Spy Smart: Jolie can wield a machine gun and pick electronic locks. Yet she doesn't use too many gadgets. Instead, her body is her instrument. Jolie recognizes the threats around her, knows how spies think and what they are likely to do. She acts and reacts. When spy politics looms in SALT, it’s transcended with smart screenplay by Kurt Wimmer and the able direction of Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games; Clear and Present Danger; The Bone Collector). One can see the Bourne Identity influence in Jolie's heroine on the run. Yet the reasons for her flight, and the unfolding of story, are richer than in the Bourne films. Action flows thanks to film editors Stuart Baird and John Gilroy. Strong performances by Liev Schrieber as Salt's crafty colleague Ted Winter, and by Chiwetel Ejiofor as determined counterintelligence geek Peabody, are a treat. With elements of mystery and a dash of Cold War paranoia, SALT ends with the hint of a sequel. Other distinctive, excellent characters crafted by Jolie include a wealthy British archaeologist in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and a bereft mother in the Oscar contender Changeling. Expand

It's still a short-enough time-killer of a thriller -- not the worst of the summer, but a long way from the current state of the art.
