  • Summary: A comic, violent, tragically hip first feature that brings a fresh new look to a classic genre, the couple-on-the-run. Derived from a manga, the bizarre collection of characters in this gangster story have been brought to life in an eruption of vivid color, surf punk music, flashy designer wear, outlandish campyness and one long, fast paced chase. Exceptionally satisfying and enormously entertaining.

Falls into the clotheshorse cliché: all dressed up and no place to go.

The non-linear plot makes for confusion and, except for the inspired final shootout, the action sequences are mediocre.
  4. Its crazy non sequiturs and anything-goes performances do lend it a certain cult appeal.
  5. The movie is visually impressive, but Ishii's virtuoso style can't overcome the flatness of the comic-book story he's telling.
  6. 30
The emotional impact of Shark Skin Man is negligible.
