An exceptionally well executed creep-out fest with a standout performance from Peter Mullan. A dizzying 180-degree turn from Anderson's last effort that proves he can handle genuine horror as well as genuine sweetness.

Takes a while to build characters, but the surroundings (awsome building... just awsome) and the OMG ending you have to really think about make it worth it. Watch it twice.

For a low buget movie, Session 9 is very well done. Yes, there are a few disconnects in the plot but over all the horror and slide into maddness are very intense. The point here is that ordinary humans can be just as terrifying as any slim cover monster on a distant planet.

The ominous atmosphere of this film alone will keep you up at night. If you like a good haunted house flick, this is a winner. Beware, you might need a psychologist to talk to when it is over!

The incredibly creepy atmosphere is somewhat wasted. With a little more effort and supernatural weirdness, this could have been the best thriller of the new century. As it stands, it never follows through on it's ominous promises; like exploring a haunted house but never finding anything as scary as what you could have imagined you would.

This was an extremely effective horror movie. The music alone will probably give me nightmares, but I also loved the acting, cinematography & extremely dark ending.

This film builds fear on the mind and it works...the fact that the film is set in an abandoned lunatic asylum sends shivers!Overall good film.

A film that pulls you into a place of tension, creepiness, and suspense from the get-go. The stellar ensemble adds so much more to the nightmare. A little too artfully directed for the horror genre and my taste...and the script fell a little short. But all-in-all, a great film to unnerve and spook!

Can anyone tell me who does that creepy voice of Simon? Loved this movie - eerie music, intense performances, particularly from Caruso & Mullan, haunting images - the wheelchair, the roses in red paint, the figure rising from the darkness that says, Hello Gordon ..., amazing visual gritiness (spelled that wrong!) that's perfect for the film & oh! what a set - a real asylem in MA. On a score of 1-10, I'd give it a 12 if I could. Expand

Living in Massachusetts I didnt even know a movie was being made in Danvers. I only live a few minutes away from the hospital itself. The movie gave me a fright I'll never forget. I've even been inside the biulding and let me tell you its no joke in there!!! Its full of asbestos and other harmful things. Its kind of interesting how they got a movie made in there. They have my 2 thumbs up. Good job to everyone. Expand

This movie was very well-written and the use of darkness made the darkness seem to be a character of itself. The ending is superb and leaves the viewer confused.

I don't know why so many critics seem to have a problem with this movie. I'm still haunted by some of the images from the film, and call me stupid if you want, but I personally didn't see the end coming. You have to be a real horror fan to nail the "suspension of disbelief" required to really enjoy a movie like this, I guess.

Chilling to the bone merely using atmosphere rather than with tons of gore. A brilliant suspense film with brains.

I am a horror buff, so I truly enjoyed this movie. This movie is very well-done. The only reason for a 9 instead of a 10 is because of some minor weaknesses in the script. This is scary on multiple levels...if you want a good scare, see this one!

Excellent movie. In todays modern climate of predictable, no brain required film making it's great to see a film that is well thought out, structured and genuinely disturbing. No rubbish fake demons in sight! Peter Mullan wouldn't get himself involved in any old nonsense. Improves with re-watching.

Acting is great, and the script is structured as well as the setting. This is what horror should be; not of monsters you CAN see, but of monsters that might be...in the weak and the wounded amongst other places. Besides the casualties of insanity, one of the key horrors is actually insanity itself.

...For me, this movie was a little bit spookier & close-to-home then it would be for most people...where the main characters in this movie are workers removing Asbestos from an Abandoned insane Asylum somewhere in the state of MA (I think it's Chelmsford, MA...) & me & a few of my friends have been breaking into a boarded-up abandoned Worcester State Mental Hospital, which is up on a hill in the woods about a mile off of Route 9 in Worcester, MA near UMass Memorial Hospital....I Drive my Chevelle up the hill with the lights off @ night, all 5 of us get out of my Chevelle all dressed in Black, all of us carrying some kind of weapon for self defense against anything we might encounter inside (one of us holds a Crow-Bar, one of us with a Medieval Style Sword, Large Knives, & I go in with a fully loaded .38 Special in a holster on my right hip.... One of the finest horror movies ever. Inspirational enough to have the makers of "Silent Hill 3" create an homage to the upside down wheelchair seen in the opening shot. Perhaps too cerebral for fans of the same-old horror genre. Sound design is incredible, and the HD cameras used really help to bring out details in the decrepit hospital.

SPOOOOOKY!!!!!! FYI, Danvers State Hospital (location of movie) is now being converted into Condos! A beautiful Victorian building. I'm glad they gave it a great send off with "Session 9". A last tribute to it's original useage. Wish I could afford a condo there!

Easily one of the scariest movies in years. Solid performances by all in the cast. Brilliantly shot and edited, this movie will creep you out and stay with you. Not for the slasher-movie fan, but if you like The Shining and Blair Witch, this movie is a must-see.

There are no contemporary scary movies anymore. BLAIR WITCH was a joke unless you bought into the suggestion that it was actually real. SESSION 9 is the real deal and truly scary. Well written.

In answer to your question Lara, Mary was the one with the multiple personalities, one of them Simon, who slaughtered her family on Christmas. I loved the movie, kept me going through the whole thing, and to think, Gordon murdered his wife the first day!!

Excellent in ambiance and subtlety. No spoon-feeding tripe with this movie. The audience actually has a choice in the interpretation of this film—demon or mere psychological illness. A Must-See.

No haunted house has ever looked so scary in the daylight. Session 9 is without a doubt one of the most hypnotic and frightening movies I have ever seen. The gore, like a lot of the characters motivation, isn't just laid out like some teenagers intestines as in most "horror" movies. This is a movie that requires thought and attention to detail. A real treat.

While not the best movie around, Session 9 will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat, wanting more and keeping you guessing at the same time. This was a very well executed movie, with a great cast and an even greater twist. Definitely a must see.

Let me put it this way. If this review was based on the story itself, it would be an 8 or a 9. The movie is moody, menacing, and at some points borderline terrifying. But there's way more to a movie than the story. In pretty much every other area, Session 9 is flawed. The characters are shallow, the dialogue painful at some points. I found myself not really caring about what happened 2/3 of the way through. But the last 10 minutes was fairly redemptive. It was pretty shocking, not a twist that I at all expected. It made it worth watching, but up until the last 10-15 minutes, it's a pretty frustrating ride. Expand

There came a point in the movie that made it very easy to guess the ending. Despite this it is hard to deny that Session 9 is a smartly crafted thriller/horror flick. A genuinely creepy movie.

A very average horror film. Some genuinely unsettling and creepy sequences, but for the most part a dry and uninteresting flick. The setting and atmosphere is very spooky and well done, but this is wasted with a bad script and plot-line, and wooden acting.

You couldn't ask for a better setting for a horror movie. What you could ask for is a better script.
