Nearly every scene is contrived, but Melfi has a nice way with dialogue, and the cast is uniformly outstanding.
Lieberher, a Philly native transplanted to L.A., is a reed-thin, wide-eyed wonder. There's none of that precocious Hollywood child-actor stuff going on; he's seriously thinking about what he has to say, assessing his words and their implications. It's rare to see any actor - let alone a novice, barely out of the single digits - so readily and naturally displaying inner thought in front of the camera.

I thought this movie was going to ****, but i am wrong. I laughed so many times,when Bill Murray's character says something funny. Writer and Director Theodore Melfi knows how to make a good comedy also an excellent drama story. Bill Murray proves at age 64 he still got the skills, but i wasn't sure if Melissa McCarthy was good in a drama movie i always loved her as a vulgar fail mouth character. People thought she was gonna **** since her dreadful film "tammy" but she nails it! as Maggie a single mother. Jaeden Lieberher is funny also cool as Oliver. I am gonna give this movie an A

"St. Vincent" is a quiet little movie that packs such a great feel good punch. Bill Murray (Vincent) is looking way old as a reckless, unfriendly curmudgeon who ends up having a young boy thrust upon him by a harried and hassled neighbor lady he doesn't even know. The relationship that develops and grows between Vincent and the boy (Oliver) is wonderful to watch. Each one learns from the other and Melissa McCarthy, in a very subdued role for a change, is believable as the shocked Mom as she learns Vincent is taking her son to the horse track and teaching him how to bet. But there are things going on in his life that no one has any idea about. We learn how Vincent gets his saintly title and that is very touching. Kleenex alert! This movie has been out for a while. If you haven't seen it, make plans to see it right away so you don't miss it. It is a delight! Bill Murray is so fun to watch, and his improv as the credits roll kept us entertained until the end.

Murray, of course, can play a redeemable misanthrope with one hand tied behind his back. Unfortunately, that's exactly what he has to do here because writer-director Theodore Melfi reins in his leading man with a script that doesn't know when to stop troweling on the sap.
Stay in your seat for the end credits, in which Murray waters a dying plant and karaokes to Bob Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm." That alone is worth double the price of admission.
Murray’s finest, funniest, meatiest performance since "Lost In Translation" — just a shame it’s contained in such a lightweight dramedy.
St. Vincent goes down easier than it probably should. It helps that Lieberher, though saddled with some cutesy movie-kid dialogue, makes a sweet and empathetic sidekick for Murray (he calls him “sir” constantly, like Marcie in old Peanuts strips), and that McCarthy, like so many gifted comedians, proves capable of playing it straight as needed.
Some moments still work after the movie grows mawkish.
Run don't walk to see this wonderful movie. Bill Murray's acting should earn him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor as it may be his finest work ever! If you are coming to see Bill Murray doing strictly comedy then this isn't for you. He does have deadpan comedic lines in his performance but this is not what this story is about. Murray plays a Senior Citizen where life has beaten him to a pulp. As a result, he's turned his back on humanity. He's a totally broke down on his luck gambler, alcoholic, deadbeat, liar, buys sex, thief, and is short tempered. Not exactly your typical Saint. But underneath this complex man, with all his failings, lies the still beating heart of a warrior. He befriends a small boy who is acted superbly in this masterpiece. He teaches him about life and never to settle for ordinary. Murray's character hides a secret which explains why he's become this miserable old person. Melissa McCarthy plays it straight as the mother of Oliver {the boy}. She is outstanding in a supporting role as she demonstrates she can really act besides just doing comedy. The entire ensemble cast is just terrific. The movie continues to build until it finally reaches its crescendo. If you have blood pumping thru your heart you should really enjoy this movie. This is Murray's showcase movie. Go see and enjoy!

Heart-warming drama. A boy discovers the man behind the grouch played by Bill Murray. Not funny except in the driest possible way, but entertaining and life-affirming none-the-less

Stereotypical characters, tired recycled plot. I know we're all supposed to like Bill Murray, but the emperor has no clothes. His accent is a laughable unconvincing failure, his character is 2 dimensional. Goes for likeable jerk, but only succeeds at the jerk part because we know so little about him. McCarthy is completely misused, she has mostly dramatic straight lines. The plot goes nowhere major, the characters learn nothing important, and we don't care, because once again, we have no idea who these characters are; there are no normal, everyday slice-of-life moments shown. They don't feel human. Gets depressing early on and then gets worse and worse, with an empty, unsatisfying attempted recovery at the end. If this is comedy, it's the worst-feeling comedy ever. Pessimism magnified.

Que? Vaya mierda de película, normalmente me gustan las películas de Bill, pero esta, sincermanete a pesar de su crítica aprobada tanto de críticos como de usuarios no lo veo normal, y menos ese 8,7 que tiene de usuarios, para nada. Por eso la puntuo con un 0 a pesar de que tampoco merezca un 0, si no un 5 como mucho 6, pero si pongo este 0 es porque me parecen mucho mejor las peliculas "Gone girl" y "Nightcrawler" que no esta.
