I liked the TV series but the movie was boring. Only a couple of funny parts but I expected much more. Not worth a rental.

Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but pretty lame. I would say it's probably not going to appeal to many people over the age of 45. If you like your humour more on the witty/dark side than silly/mean, stay away. Really just pretty stupid and a waste of some not bad talent.

This movie is both bizarre and hilarious. I have never seen the series, but this film satirizes sex, race relations, religion and the extremely surreal experience of high school. Great writing and very funny characterizations.

If you loved the tv show, you will want to see the movie. But don't expect to be taken beyond "more of the same." What was one of the smarter, more joyful, and creative cable efforts of the last decade remains enjoyable, but unevolved in this "prequel." Many gags are recycled from the series, which is fine, but leaves one mourning what could have been. Unfortunately, the team breaks what didn't need to be fixed. Where is Roberto Gari's wide-eyed claw-handed Guy Blank? The part as written for Dan Hedaya is completely blank and a waste of his talent. Missing is any chemistry between Jerri and Derrick (much more engagingly played by Larc Spies in the series) and Jerri-Megawatt-y relationship doesn't work as well as Jerri-Orlando. While the series felt kind of loosely edited, it was chock full of moments to be discovered in mutliple viewings. The movie elicited laughs from the audience, but those laughs were further apart and more forced than I have scene from the tv series. Overall, a disappointment, but fans of Sedaris will always want more. Expand

I was a huge fan of the show but this movie was a real letdown. All the good laughs were in the 1st 10 minutes and a lot of the jokes were retreads from the show. Amy Sedaris is still fabulous but this was not her crowning moment.

This was a truly terrible movie. I've never heard of the TV show, but this was bad. There is something seriously wrong with Amy Sedaris' face in this. With a pointless and far-off plotline, it barely made me want to almost laugh. The script is just bad. I implore anyone who hasn't seen this to never watch it.

It's true, this movie is boring. I love watching Amy Sedaris and her little tics, but that doesn't justify this movie. Great cameos, but again, doesn't help. A story would help. Funny-ish at times, but mostly a chore to watch. Could be better.

Fan of the series - but movie was really lame. It seems as if they took the original premise of the show, watered it down, spread it out and went home. Very dissapointing.

While it may not be up to par with the TV series, it does generate laughs and is a far cry better than most summer comedies I've seen. Sedaris and Colbert really shine in this film. Some of the cameos hit and some miss, but overall a great time at the movies.

A real disappointment! I am a big fan of the series and this movie did not even come close to generating the laughs the TV show did. Aside from being rather unfunny, they recycled a number of the jokes/gags verbatim from the TV show--very uncool. Save your money and just go buy the series on DVD.

My rating is for those who have never seen the TV show. For avid fans of the cult series - such as myself - the rating would be about a 6. The film is full of great jokes and boasts a stellar cast, but a fan of the show would expect more. A lot of the jokes are recycled - something I don't mind - but there aren't enough new ones. I also miss the overly dramatic music, of which there was very little. Regardless, I still own the dvd. However, the TV series is much, much better. Expand

Fans of the show will rejoice and a few newbies will become converts. In this heightened reality, there are no rules except to get the laugh. And they do, incessantly.
  2. When it comes to rude comedy, one person's caviar is another's smelly fish gunk. A case in point is Strangers With Candy.

Strangers With Candy -- a perfect title -- is filled with straight-faced loonies. It's a nutcake you actually want to eat.
