  1. Mr. Carter's intelligent, straight-forward style and the good performances of the young actors prohibit hooting at the story's completely American approach to a German story. [11 Mar 1993]
  2. A corny but sincere weeper written by Jonathan Marc Feldman, directed by Thomas Carter, and shot mainly in Prague.
  3. The movie is a somber, smoothly crafted drama about a wily adolescent who senses there's something rotten going on in his country but can't quite put a finger on it.

Despite energetic dance sequences and appealing leads, the film falls prey to pat psychologizing and some stunningly puerile notions of history.

For its historical detail and recognition that teenagers were around long before James Dean sparked up a Marlboro, this film deserves some credit.
  6. Yet for all its faults and limitations, Swing Kids is not necessarily easy to forget. [05 Mar 1993]

This senior-class Cabaret is just a TV after-school special with a better soundtrack. [05 Mar 1993]

Swing Kids has a multitude of problems, the most glaring of which is its loose treatment of history and the Nazis.
  9. The script is all too often downright clunky though it's saved by vigorous direction (especially in the dance sequences) and performances.

It's earnest but shallow, and condescends to the youth market it's obviously designed for. [05 Mar 1993]
  11. Swing Kids looks good and moves quickly at first; later on, mired in familiar-feeling moments, it flounders
  12. This well-meaning drama was made with obvious passion.

Swing Kids really doesn't go anywhere. [05 Mar 1993]
  14. It's Footloose Loose In The Third Reich and, even with your expectations kept knee-high to a kindergarten, you might have at least hoped for some finger-poppin' music and a few great dance scenes. Sorry. Here, too, things come up short. [05 Mar 1993]
  15. Except for that music and a bit of the acting, Swing Kids is unsatisfactory from just about every point of view. [05 Mar 1993]

The screenplay is so murky, indeed, that I was never sure whether the Kids hated the Hitler Youth lads because they were Nazis, or simply because they didn't swing.

Apart from its appealing young cast and period score, it has precious little to entice audiences into movie theaters.

It's a moralistic muddle with only one message: If Disney wants to make movies about Germans, it should restrict its efforts to German shepherds.
