  1. The most unexpectedly audacious, exhilarating, wildly creative adventure thriller I've seen in ages.
  2. A deeply pleasurable, old-fashioned blood-'n'-guts adventure film.
  3. It falls short where it counts: In the final confrontation.
  4. My biggest complaint: Following two nasty bloodbaths and an invasion of the creatures' lair, the final showdown seems anti-climactic.
  5. A straightforward, no-nonsense, agreeably old-fashioned historical action movie.
  6. Has a remote feel. It sometimes impresses but never soars.

For the most part it delivers the goods.
  8. Warrior has the underwritten, overproduced bluster of "Conan the Barbarian."

About everything is big in The 13th Warrior except the writing, which is microscopic.

A well-marbled, albeit derivative, slab of action-movie man meat.
  12. Gives you the delirious thrill of ripping off your enemy's head and watching the blood gush by providing a ringside seat.
  13. Terrible, unnamable enemies turn out to be uncompelling indeed.
  14. 40
Indulges in enough grubby histrionics and costume-adventure cliches to give you fifth-grade flashbacks.

McTiernan's extensive action background is nowhere evident in the murky, all-but-impossible to follow battle sequences.
  16. 40
Reminiscent of the opening moments of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," actually, only without the clever wit.
  17. Thinking too much about the contents will ruin what little pleasure there is in the experience.

    Bloody but anemic story.
  19. Too lightweight and streamlined to be memorable.
  20. 38
Lumbering from one expensive set piece to the next without taking the time to tell us a story that might make us care.
  21. In tackling 1000 A.D., (McTiernan)'s suddenly an unwieldy, clunky filmmaker.
  22. Just a great, empty wind machine.
  23. 30
With the possible exception of the action sequences and the occassionally imaginitive set design, it's awful.
  24. 25
A grand, eye-popping film, a beautifully photographed epic with the depth of a Bugs Bunny Cartoon.
  25. Silly supernatural Viking epic.

    Mud-stained, blood-soaked and completely useless.

  1. This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. This movie was butchered by the Disney editors- a shame. There's just barely enough continuity in the story line to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it immensely. Yeah, you'll have to 'suspend belief' for a while and extrapolate a little to make up for the editing. Ahmad ibn Fadlan meets the Seven Samurai, or another "Dirty Dozen" that includes a 'fish out of water'. Originally, this was a 2+ hour movie. Hopefully, someday the original version with come out on DVD or BR. A long-shot pipe dream considering Disney owns the rights and it lost money in its' theatrical release. Full Review »
  2. This is one of the top movies of all time. It's greatness is not measured in a single viewing but in multiple viewings. It is one of the few movies I watch over and over again, each time with more pleasure. Most movies do not inspire repeated viewings, but this one does. I've checked all my friends and they all have a copy of this movie and all feel the same way. Although upon first viewing you may indeed think it is a 7 out of 10, you will find this movie sticks with you and quickly grows on you making it that rare 10 out of 10. Watch it. I don't give spoilers you can find them on the net if you really want them. I mean it watch it. stop reading and go rent, buy, borough or steal it.... don't steal it... it's Christmas, so be good! 3. Not a bad little action movie, not high art but entertaining. Antonio Benderas from back when he was kinda cool. I think the smarest thing was that they don't drag the movie on and on, a quick, nice little action esk movie can be nice from time to time. Full Review »
