One of the essentials. It's somewhat dated, but that's not a flaw. One of the earliest action movies to put it all together and be entertaining. Tightly edited. Still instructive on how to make a movie to those who will listen. However, it's a Hollywood showpiece, like a musical, except no music. I think merry old England was a much dirtier place, and the social division between the pleasant and the obnoxious was not so clearly drawn. Expand

We've all seen this dozens of times on TV but this DVD release finally gives us some idea as to what viewers saw when it was first released in the cinemas in 1939. Sumptuous. Like opening a box of candy. Also crammed full of extras including fascinating outtakes. All in all an excellent homage.

This is the kind of big entertainment that Hollywood does best, and oh, it's also the quintessential swashbuckler flick. Flynn's joyful swagger is matched only by the physical exuberance of his performance. Olivia de Havilland is a vision of loveliness. Claude Rains plots and schemes with lovable dead-pan nastiness. In other words, everything is clicking in this picture. Robin Hood is a beautiful spectacle and an essential addition to any film lovers DVD collection. Expand

Only a spirited and extravagant production could do justice to the Robin Hood legend; this film is more than equal to the task. Korngold's score won a well-deserved Oscar, as did the editing and art direction.

Robin Hood is movie pageantry at its best, done in the grand manner of silent spectacles, brimming over with the sort of primitive energy that drew people to the movies in the first place.

Is it a silly movie? At times, yes. Is it creaky and blatant and obvious? Quite often, absolutely. But should you miss it in this splendidly colorful restoration? Not on your life.
