Romantic comedies have become something of a tired staple in indie filmmaking, these days. Yet, odd as it may seem, it's the unlikely interracial geriatric chops on display in The Annihilation of Fish that breathe new life into the genre.

The love that grows between Fish and Poinsettia could have turned treacly in the wrong hands, but director Charles Burnett -- has the direct observational style of the silent masters.

An amusing trifle. There are few comic staples less convincing or more timeworn than charming lunatics in love, and the only thing that lifts this film beyond TV-movie quality is Jones' performance.

A minnow of a movie. A drear moment in the careers of all concerned.

This movie is one movie that I can put in my favorites list. It may not have been in theaters or racked in ten gajillian dollars but it was definitely worth taking time out of my day to watch. The characters and the plot were very well put together and the acting made it that much better (not to mention that listening to James Earl Jones say "tapioca puddin'" was very entertaining ;-). It really is too bad that it isn't more mainstream so more people could enjoy it. Expand

I think this is a wonderful, touching film. Yes, like many of Charles Burnett's films, it was a low budget, independently financed film, but it does not feel low budget in any way. The acting is superb and the technical aspects (photography, sound, etc.) are great. It is shame that this film has not been able to be seen by more people. Shame on Todd McCarthy for his mean, misguided review after its first screening. Expand
