Fernando Trueba is one of the most prestigious film directors who have Spain (he has an Academy Award to prove it). "The Girl of Your Dreams" was a typical movie Spanish, Andalusian charm and beauty. In "Chico & Rita", Trueba showed his love for boleros, Cuban music and an ode to deceased Bebo Valdés. A beautiful film, with class, elegance and a great fusion between Spain and France. Expand

Well-crafted as it is, though, The Artist and the Model suffers from the familiarity of its plot, and especially in comparison with "La belle noiseuse," which ran over twice as long as this film but contained ten times as much insight into human nature.

Instead of developing the story’s wartime context, Trueba and veteran screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière offer passing reflections on the relationship between observation and the largely mental process of creativity, but little that ignites genuine drama.

Shot in magisterial black-and-white, veteran director Trueba's drama is a welcome return from the Belle Epoque man.
