Shot in magisterial black-and-white, veteran director Trueba's drama is a welcome return from the Belle Epoque man.

The Artist and the Model is a simple, straightforward film about the wonder and awe that the natural world inspires in us.

Well-crafted as it is, though, The Artist and the Model suffers from the familiarity of its plot, and especially in comparison with "La belle noiseuse," which ran over twice as long as this film but contained ten times as much insight into human nature.

It’s a modest, reserved character piece that doesn’t push an agenda. The problem is that it comes across as if it lacks opinions, rather than holding them back.

The Artist and the Model isn’t about much, other than female beauty. That theme is not exactly controversial. Chalk the tameness of the subject matter up to the period in which the film is set.

Cardinale’s few brief scenes are the ones with the most depth; her facial lines really did come along with some wisdom.

Treating one's audience like ignorant children in need of lecturing is hardly a way to win fans, or display one's own artistry.

Fernando Trueba is one of the most prestigious film directors who have Spain (he has an Academy Award to prove it). "The Girl of Your Dreams" was a typical movie Spanish, Andalusian charm and beauty. In "Chico & Rita", Trueba showed his love for boleros, Cuban music and an ode to deceased Bebo Valdés. With "The artist and the model," Trueba shows us his passion for French films, to Truffaut, old cinema, to the French language. A beautiful film, with class, elegance and a great fusion between Spain and France. Expand

This movie was flat on about every level. There was no chemistry between any of the actors to make a ridiculous story line even an ounce believable. Don't waste your time seeing this flick. And I should add that I love art films. Collapse
