--Classic-- This movie rules, and i will tell you why....I have five reasons why this is a must see....to begin it has Vin Diesel, by far the greatest actor i have ever seen since Dolph Longren played the Russian in Rocky 4. The dialogue Vin Diesel (thus he is probably my favorite actor) has in any movie is above anything else i have ever heard, not to mention the man can barely talk, yet making this movie all the much better (triple xxx's dialogue is even better{i.e. "I want all that in here"}). Two the man is put on planet called "Crematoria," how can you be critical of a movie when the main hero is placed on a planet called Crematoria, not to mention the main enemies race are called "Necromongers." Thirdly how can you not love a movie where the evil leader is half alive and half dead, although this seems impossible, its not for those Hollywood execs who made Riddick. You have to love a movie where the main enemy is half alive and half dead, i know its against the laws of physics but come on, now that is sweetness!!! How in craps name can you be half alive and half dead, but Riddick accomplishes this. Fourthly, now this is incredible, hold onto your hats for this one....Riddick is apparently faster than light, once again this movie breaks the laws of physics. In one of my favorites scenes he outruns sun's rays on the planet Crematoria (yes the more you say the planet's name it gets better, even better is Necromonger). In the sequences of outrunning it he says an amazing line that only Vin Diesel can say," there is only one speed my speed."...come on the first four have got to wet your whistel so far... Five, "You keep what you kill." That is the main theme of the movie if you kill a Necromonger you get all his stuff...now if that isn't sweet i don't know what is.... To conclude, I have never quite seen such an amazing ending as this one. I won't let the cat out of the bag, but you won't be dissappointed by the ending, in one word, "amazing." Please see this movie... Expand

It takes more than vague references to historical (holocaust) and contemporary (Iraq) disasters to make a great film. It takes more than a charismatic lead to make a great film. It takes more than huge CGI backdrops to make a great film. As such, this is definitely not a great film. In fact, it's not even an OKAY film. Twohy's original lo-fi masterpiece has been completely eclipsed by Vin Diesel's ego-maniacal insistance on turning the genuinely brilliant one-off Pitch Black into a big-budget franchise. Maybe it's just sour grapes after he lost the Fast/Furious and xXx gigs... Hollywood doesn't like a smart alek and somebody is getting too big for his damn boots. Expand

What the hell is this, really? This movie is....hmmm...I'm not sure....silly? maybe. I acutally like this movie for some reason which is the only reason i am giving it a 6. All in all, I really think some of the thought like the 'deadly sun rise' and four faces were really cool......but poor, poor, poor acting is what ruins this. Every charater is SOoooooo over acted its not funny. These actors blow hard-core. Even Vin Desil (which really is'nt to out of the ordinary) blows. However, with that said i still think this movie could of been great...maybe loss that 'I'm a big dumb a$$ with a goofy name' and put some REAL interesting lines and plots in........by the way did anyone see the 'Riddick Insider' on the freatures of the DvD? What the heck kind of production notes are those? If the only way to understand the story fully is to read these completly dumb, child like clips of info then the so called 'director' really left alot out. Expand

I loved "Pitch Black". I would have given it at least a 9. This film, which is supposed to be the sequel to "Pitch Black" is an utterly stupid, laughable science fiction that never makes any sense. I pretty much hated this film. Nothing was useful in this film. Vin Diesel was annoying and bitter. Judi Dench is the strongest performer in the movie and even she lacks substance in her character. Dumb, utterly dumb! Expand

I give this movie a 3 for very good special effects and Vin Diesel. Not to say the guy is Olivier or Pacino, but he has the "IT" quality that very few American action stars have, like The Rock. The guy is utterly watchable and he plays his role here with conviction. This movie on the otherhand suffers from the "Van Helsing" syndrome...i.e. lethargic pacing, goes on too long, nonstop dull and repetitive action scenes, etc. I mean honestly people how many of you can take watching more bad guys shooting guns at the good guys, them fighting each other, punching each other into the ground, and all that. If you are looking for a good action movie that is entertaining without being completely dull and repetitive, try Troy. Expand

A Sci-Fi action romp. Wall to wall effects. Bad one liners. Over-acting galore. A plot thick with allegorical implications to the war in Iraq and religion?s role in said war. Simply stated ? this is a summer blockbuster. I was one of the few chuckling along on this rollercoaster ride, most of the audience seemed bored or indifferent or both. I really didn?t mind it ? better than Underworld, the last big action movie I saw, but not up to the Arnold all out auctioneers of the past ? ?stick around?. Diesel?s not bad, but comedy wit is not his strong suit, his biceps are. Enjoy it for what it is kids ? loud and flashy. Expand

Some reviewers seem confused by what this film is. It's excellent summer fare. I'm not going to cover too many of the plot points, since this is covered elsewhere. Rather, I'm going to express HOW MUCH FUN this film is, and suggest that some of the print media's reviews perhaps didn't quite get the point of the film. The plot is essentially a chase film, following the character Riddick from _Near Dark_. The story is largely from his perspective, thus parts of the story seem to rush at you without due explanation. However, I think this structure works - your confusion is Riddick's confusion. Once seen in this light, perhaps some of the negative reviewers would give more positive marks. The plot is well constructed, without bending to explain too much for those not paying attention. It doesn't explain the myriad backstory elements, rather referencing enough to keep the plot moving without bogging down in how this civilization manifests itself, how that technological gizmo works, how some groups have unearthly abilities and how it all works together. But enough is shown to power the story forward and refer to the DVD (or see multiple times at the theater) and you'll see that it all works together in a compatible, if not fully explained whole. Set design and effects are outstanding. Acting is solid for the genre and the dialogue is fun, almost verging on camp of the action/sci-fi variety. Tongue in cheek seriousness w/o verging into cheese. It won't win a slew of Oscars but SEE this film. It's fun, it's visually hypnotising and it throws more ideas at you that many films of this sort that have come out for quite a while. Expand

Vin Diesel completionists need only see this film. It's a mess. The plot is pretty much non-existent and there is NO character development whatsoever. So much is left unexplained and the fight scenes are choppy and shot too close up. Vin Diesel has the emotional delivery of a baked potato. Hell, why not just replace him with one? They look pretty much the same.

This movie wasnt very bad. Of course there is a lot of cheese everywhere, but who didnt expect this. The Main actress (her name eludes me) was absolutely terrible, her one liners were in a word: Horific. A real bad one she said was "death by tea cup". She and Riddick also played a game of "whos the better killer" which was very corny and totally uncalled for. This movie was not all bad though. It entertains and has a strong story. I still think they should have focused more on the fights, they had good fight sequences, but just thought it best to be past them, and move along with the story. This would actually make a good rental. Expand

Vin Diesel glowers behind his dark goggles; vin diesel is charitable enough to his legion of fans to speak a few lines of dialogue; vin deisel dices up the baddies like only a fame-crazed non-talent can. the story ? well, vin deisel kills, flexes his body-by-jake in various poses, and ends up lording over a cgi-universe that has been passed around since the late 1970s. the whole film is tailored like a candy bar with all too specific demographic in mind. ouchy. First of all let me say I am a big fan of the original Pitch Black. This follow-up is a solid sci-fi movie in a genre where mediocrity is the norm. I am so much accustomed to these movies starting with a bang and dieing half way through the script. This one instead builds nicely and keeps you engaged for the entire run. The character background is a bit week (especially for the villains) particularly if you aren?t already familiar with the Riddick character. For what this is ? your basic sci-fi action film ? it does a wonderful job at delivering a combination of a solid story, great action sequences, special effects, and settings that better than anything I?ve seen come around for a long time. Alright, when it comes to action movies, there are the great ones like Predator and Terminator 2, then the abysmal copycat ones like Cradle 2 tha Grave and Romeo Must Die. Chronicles of Riddick is somewhat in between. It wasn't as bad as your C2tG's and such, but it wasn't great, either. It showed promise, and wasn't too bad of a movie so long as you aren't in the mood to pick it apart. Overall, wasn't great, but wasn't painful. Expand

First of all, incredible soundtrack..this movie is one that stays with you long after you've watched because I thought the way Twohy fashioned the story combining elements of Shakespeare and the look of sci fi was creative. The critics who panned the film either couldn't appreciate or disliked this backdrop or it reminded them too unpleasantly about the Iraq war?! I thought there was a lot of symbolism to the current war in Iraq --immediately thought of it when the Necros "conquered" Helion Prime and called for a cleansing and renouncing of beliefs--alot like the occupation and U.S. imperialism in general. I'd like to think it was indirectly sending a political message. I thought Thandie Newtown and Karl Urban were great and Vin Diesel really is fun and great to watch. The one-liners are all a part of the Riddick character--it fits right in with his "just want to be left alone" persona, but of course as the film progresses, he's being challenged as to what responsibility he has to the rest of humanity, what role he must play. Although the editing could have been better I think, Riddick delivered big time because it was wildly entertaining and thought provoking at the same time--I hope CoR and Diesel get vindicated. Expand

Ludicrously silly to say the least, Chronicles is chock full of terrible dialogue and some of the most laugh inducing names in movie history. I can't imagine someone naming a planet Crematoria and the bad guys Necromongers with a straight face, and not in a total parody or the worst of the worst B movie prodution, but someone surely did here. The sets and costumes look straight out of some kind of bad S&M fantasy and the story itself is just above retarded. It's pretty funny to see the script writers introducing all of these "shocking" habits of the Necromongers but not really explaining any one of them, so they really are meaningless and not that shocking at all since we never really find out what being "half dead and half alive," what being a necromonger, or anything else of what this mess of a movie really means. There are occasional slivers of decent production values in Chronicles, but that's about it. The idea behind Riddick's anti-hero has potential too, but it's also handled pretty poorly. The bad guys look like death metal band members and their women look like vampires godesses or something like that. It's so bad it's funny. Expand

I found it mostly boring and tedious. Vin Diesel is a horrible actor, but he can't muscle his way this film. Towards the end it gets really interesting, but that first hour and a half feels like a millenium. Pitch Black is a better film. Wait untill this one comes out to rent before viewing it. This movie was great. In most depictions of back ground the future everything is usally dark and wirery (Aliens, Matrix), or dark and smooth (Blade Runner, Star Wars). Riddick went another way, making the ships very stylized. Admittedly this movie is only intended as a bit of mindless summer fun--well, they got the mindless part right anyway! I'm not sure which was my most favorite part, the fact that the Necromongers had the technology to wipe out the defenses of entire planets in moments but couldn't seem to deal with a guy who had--gasp--a knife (well, admittedly, it did have a curved blade), or the scene on planet Crematoria with the sunrise that superheated the planet's surface into a boiling cauldron of fire and ash only survivable if you--wait for it--crouched behind a big rock! I give it one point for the look of the sets which was faintly reminiscent of the old Flash Gordon movies. Expand

Before i begin to critique this one...I haven't seen Dame Judi Dench this compelling since...EVER...ok now that I got that out of the way, let me begin: Vin Diesel, that guy who reads off a cue card for a living, appears to be the only creature or thing in the entire world who can stop the Necromongers from doing more damage to worlds than the movie Garfield did to my stomach. Why is he the only dude who can halt this race? Because he was in Fast and the Furious of course. So, he is intriguing, but he just couldn't rescue the movie from being drawn out, incredibly repetitive, and surprisingly dull. I couldnt get over how long this movie was. No problem if there was some excitement...I mean anything at all, to sustain the film. But, no, we watch as the movie drags and basically stops in (insert clever named planet here) prison for the duration of the middle of the film. Where is the vanquishing? Where is the...um beef? Additionally, it appeared to me that the Necromongers had no weaknesses...they could push down some kind of a stick and dispatch bombs over baghdad, could move at ridiculous speeds, and keep what they kill(??). So, who could possibly beat this crazy race? Oh, right, let's just have a power-hungry backstabber so that we can end this. The follow-up to the surprising hit Pitch Black deserved better. Expand

I went in expecting a subpar movie and that's exactly what i got. then why did see it; i guess for curiosity purposes. if you liked "Pitched Black" you may perhaps very well enjoy this film. Comparing the two, CoR is a much better film in having a much more expansive storyline and the cgfx was quite decent. Vin Deisel may not have delivered oscar-winning acting, but provided enough action and that's all you should expect from any muscle-headed actor. the movie SEEMED unusually long, but i believe it was under 2h. that should imply something about the movie from an entertainment perspective. for a moment, i thought the film would abruptly end (because it was dragging on so long), and a third installment would be filmed, but i was surpised that they actually fit the whole movie into this film. if you've watched this you may now what i mean. so if you decide to watch this, do not be critical or you'll end up having a bad time and have wasted money. instead, view with an open-mind to fullfill curiosity as i have. i have no regrets, but i still won't praise this movie. Unless he knew that, in which case he'd be in on the joke...anyway, the movie is spastic space opera that could have been great if only it could hadn't been incomprehensible, pretentious, unoriginal, inanely told, cheerlessly capricious, horribly rendered dark and smudgy, underwritten. Classic Space opera with fairly good special effects, awsome settings, non stop action, and a good ending. I can't believe the low ratings the critics gave this. Come on guys, this is not trying to get "best picture" or make a profound statement on the human condition! This is a "B" movie trying to give a few hours of Summer fun escapism, at at that it succeeds incredibly. My only beef is the herky-jerky close up camera work on a lot of the fight scenes. I know this is getting very popular now because it's easier and cheaper to film a fight this way, but it looks sloppy and confusing! It didn't catch me up in the action, it just made me impatient for the scene to end! Expand

I was expecting better as I am a fan of Pitch Black. As with most sequels spurred on by unexpected success of the original, Riddick is pretty substandard. The beauty of Pitch Black was the isolation from the world. This has Riddick dealing with the very survival of the universe and all that. A race of halfdeads that conquers other worlds? Not very original - ala the Borg. For some reason, it kept reminding me of Battlefield Earth, which is not good. Expand

Vin diesel's voice and presence can sell ice to eskimos and raincoats to african bushmen perhaps but even he cannot salvage this film from being a flop. one of the reasons for this is that this film has no story, but if you think cool looking outfits and spaceships count as a story; then we differ in opinion and you shall enjoy yourself. the direction of this movie is one of the very worst i have seen. the cameras are doing close ups almost the entire film, not only giving us motion sickness but we cannot see what the hell is going on either. the reality is...nothing is going on, at least give us a larger view of nothing rather than an enlarged one. the director thinks that a woman in a prison should be sexy and lara croftesque...he thinks she will balance diesel well, he is wrong again; the heroine makes childish evil faces and shows skin to grab our respect and love...it truns into a stupid mess mainly because she cannot act and her whole persona doesn't make any sense. vin diesel looks very tired in the film from start to finish, he lacks the awesome spurkyness he delivered in his movie "xxx", maybe because they used blue-screens which made him confused or maybe he did not have any idea what the hell was going on either (like the audience). whatever the case, he blew this one big. could have been a far better film because it seems the art department did their homework and made some cool things here and there...oh well, here goes a multi million in to the bottomless pit. this movie is a good example of the absence of filmmakings first rule SCRIPT!!!!!!! It also could ahve been a contender for one of the best space opera flicks of all time. Vin Diesel makes a perfect anti-hero. The Necromongers were not as fearsome as they could have been, but were still very cool. The ending was not at all fun, but if handled right, it definitely sets up a direct sequel... Expand

Like I said about the other film. Riddick is the best ever. But the film had its dull spots.

This is by far one of the better action/sci-fi movies to date. Vin Diesel plays the perfect Riddick, and the campy one liners work perfectly with pave of the movie. The set design is amazing and the visuals are astounding. Loved every second.

It's actually not perfect, but though I can see why people dissed it a bit, they're just uptight. This movie is colorful, fun, and vin's character is a blast to watch.

Much better than the first one, and the first one was pretty good too. Anyone giving this movie a score under 7 is obviously a complete and utter idiot. Plus, the acting was surprisingly GOOD, and that's one of the main things i look for in a movie. Vin Diesel played the part perfectly, and David Twohy is an absolute genius!!!

This was not a bad movie if you want heavy duty sci-fi action. It had plenty of that. These types of sci-fi movies are always convoluted and muddled in their plots as if every person who saw the movie had "read the book." I didn't. However, Vin Diesel kicked ass and had at least two consistencies in this movie - he always had throbbing computer generated blue eyes and always had hairy armpits which are shown at every single opportunity as some sort of realism shot to remind us that we are dealing with a real man and not a computer generated configuration. Vin Diesel may never perform Shakespeare but he may continue to make money doing movies of this sort. Expand

I just rented the unrated Director's Cut DVD, not having seen the original in the theater. The movie i just saw would have received much greater acclaim than the theatrical version, had it been released. Listening to the director's commentary, it's clear that studio pressure forced some really brutal edits that ended up draining a lot of the interest, depth and coherence of the film. I gave this film a 10 - it doesn't quite deserve that, but the director's cut simply does not deserve the abysmal theatrical rating and should be rerated by critics although sadly it won't; it is no doubt a substantially better film. If you have the slightest affection for good science fiction, the d.c. is a must-rent. Expand

This movie is high-science fiction. By that I mean places, characters, and story line that have little if nothing in common with our real world. Some people like these kind of story lines and many don't - fine, I'm not about to try to convert anyone. But why is it that mainstream reviewers can't seem to separate their own personal tastes from the film they review. Is it that Chronicles is such a terrible film or just that the reviewer was not into this type of movie and became bored? I think the latter. I mean come on, Van Helsing was a bad film ? incoherent story line, uninspired script, special effects for the sake of special effects, etc. Chronicles hardly has these weaknesses and is actually a well made film. How about giving credit where credit is due? Expand

The critics take themselves way to seriously. This was a VERY entertaining movie for those who like Sci-Fi movies. Vin Diesel plays the role well and supporting cast was excellent. Great special effects. Looking forward to future Chronicles.

The movie was not as good as Pitch Black; while it tried to go on a larger scale in comparison to the movie that spawned it, it wasn't as entertaining to me. Much of the action was over the top and often repetitive, and some of the stuff was just so damn confusing. Seriously, I almost had a seizure after a few of the action scenes. Also, the one-liners couldn't get any more ridiculous. One of my favorites is when the guys are forced to run from the coming sunrise which oddly creates fire across the planet. Vin Diesel says, "We go at one speed: MINE" So laughable. (and predictable, both my friend and I thought he was going to say "mine" before he did) I must give the movie credit, though. The scenery was very breathtaking although almost all completely computer generated. The movie's plot was also much better than what the previous idea was for the sequel. (it was a stupid rehash of the first involving tiger-like creatures) The movie did suceed in getting a "bigger" feel than Pitch Black, but I wasn't as entertained. Keep in mind, though, I still liked it, but Pitch Black is just one of my favorite movies. And I have to give Vin some credit; he's not the best actor, but he knows how to play one badass mother****er. 'Nuff said. Expand

I like Vin as an anti hero and enjoy the cheesy one liners. To the critics, you were expecting what? A tear jerking drama or maybe a spine twisting thriller... this is a Sci-Fi Action Adventure. I think Chronicles of Riddick more than delivered on what it set out to do. It was worth every dollar. I will buy the DVD and go to the theatre to watch the next Chronicles of Riddick.

The critics are wrong on this one, it really is a great film from beginning to the end. Don't try to analyze the story, just let you be taken by the stunning metal-click special effects, landscapes, design, characters, and ambiance. I really liked the film and was disappointed with critics who missed the gist of the film altogether.

Any sentence with the term "Necromonger" is automatically funny and/or stupid. You keep waiting for the next exchange of dialogue, because the difference between bad writing and bad action, is that the former can be entertaining. Incredibly, the gap between the last two Matrix sequels and this Vin Diesel vehicle, isn't that wide, since both franchises are weak in narrative, are darkly lit, have capable actors defeated by silly costumes, and contain no character development that could lead to a laugh or two, or even a smile. You can't cite Van Diesel's skills as an actor for the film's failure to work, not with Judy Dench flickering all over the place and Thandie Newton having her Thandie Newton qualities blanched out by the modern screenplay, the screenplay by committee. David Twohy directed the underrated "The Arrival". Expand

This film is hilarious! It's too bad they didn't bill it as a comedy. Riddick suffers from poor acting, an unbelievable story, bad set and costume design, uninspiring music and, it would seem, even bad directing. Ignore the Variety quote ... this film is worse than Battlefield Earth in every way except special effects.

This is actually a fairly well rounded sci-fi/action flick. It has its "over-the-top" moments, but they're pulled off well. I do not credit Vin Diesel as a great actor, so it's a good thing he naturally fits the role.

For those of you who decide to give this movie a poor rating I can only suspect your either not SciFi fans or wouldn't know a good movie if it bite you in the "___". In any case, maybe in the future you might try living in the plot and not trying to pick everything apart. And yes, Pitch Black was a 9 as well.

The biggest problem with this sequel, which is hardly a problem with sequels, is that the plot is too involved. Pitch Black had a good plot, creative, sci-fi horror. Chronicles on the other hand, tries to be an art movie about war, which it fails in.

Just seen Riddick on DVD. This is an ambitious attempt to create a coherent universe within a 2 hour action film. The criticisms are Riddickulous. It's escapism folks, it's an action film. All those desperately intelligent critiques claiming the plot is difficult to follow, are you joking? Criticisms to be dismissed: that an action film is full or, duh, action; and is light on, duh, character development; and that a modern sci-fi/fantasy story has, duh, taken liberties with scientific principles (in the context of an alternate universe); and lastly that, duh, action film roles are overacted in a hollywood blockbuster. Get over yourselves. It's a highly entertaining action film and it works very well. Expand

I was very surprised by the critic reviews on this one. Among B movies, this is as good as it gets! It's also a solid sci-fi action film, and a worthy sequel to Pitch Black. There are a couple odd things here and there that smell of unecessary studio involvement (the unnecessary intro narration and the renaming of Jack to "Kira"), but there's solid acting, brisk pacing, a nice plot and a terrific ending. What more could you want without remaking Pitch Black? Expand

David Twohy took his solid Pitch Black film and spun it off into... complete and utter crap. With horrendous dialogue and tiny sets that look like they were built by elementary school kids for a school play, you're inclined to think that this is supposed to be a comedic parody of the first film. But no... the film presents the material with the same seriousness as a production of Hamlet or GlenGarry Glen Ross. Whatever. After slogging your way through one awful "action" set piece after another, the final battle turns out to be a joke where the universe-conquering, death-defying bad guy turns out to be a pathetic wet noodle who crumbles under Riddick's unstoppable awesomeness. Yawn. Expand
