The best film I've seen (so far) this year. Much better than Chabrol's last picture, the weak "Merci Pour Le Chocolat". Unlike what many reviewers are writing here, Chabrol is not just merely recycling his old ideas and making another attack on bourgeouis families. Instead of having his upper middle class abode shattered by outside forces, the rot comes from within, destroying this family from the inside out, and despite the freedom and happiness the characters achieve, they are still trapped in the prison of their own making. In my opinion, this film ranks with "Le Boucher", "Les Bonnes Femmes" & "La Ceremonie" as one of Chabrol's best work. If it plays near you, don't miss it. Expand

Chabrol is the only mature master still making films. This and La Ceremonie are not just about "the bourgeoisie' as the critics would have it, any more than Antigone is about "the royals." The low scores given by critics such Elvis Mitchell say more about modern philistinism than about this profound, subtle, literate and infinitely amusing gem. A young man in the film, who has just returned from America, explains that Americans weren't too bad, but "They believe in God and money..: After reading most of the reviews above, except for Michael Wilmington, I'd argue that Americans deserve to watch Tupac Resurrection (God) and the Elf (money). 1. Chabrol has been making and remaking this film for six decades now. He seemingly will never tire of explaining how tired he is of the petit bourgeoisie.

A terrific multigenerational cast brings a subtle, mordant, frequently funny tale of family secrets vividly to life.

For all its aloof indirectness, The Flower Of Evil wants little more than to sling another arrow at the bourgeoisie, something Chabrol has done with greater flair on many other occasions.
