I cannot believe that people could honestly state that they hated this movie because it was "depressing." Sure, I certainly didn't walk out of the theater feeling like sunshine and lollipops, but that doesn't mean I thought it was a bad movie. On the contrary, I thought it was unbelievably brilliant. People need to get over the fact that Jennifer Aniston had a successful television show and learn to appreciate the new and edgy work that she's managed (I mean, Robin Williams makes an Indie and he's risky-- Aniston makes one and she's ridiculous?). I fully encourage whoever's reading this to see the movie. Bluntly stated, the people who gave this movie a low score are emotionally retarded. Expand

Kiss On The Ass or whatever your real name is you have some nerve with that review! I went to see it on your recommendation. It was horrible with simple minded people and totally unbelievable characters. Yes, Jennifer can act, but how can anyone take her serious in this role? Is it believable that she could be married to her dimwit ugly looking husband; have an affair with a mental case who is basically a emotionally disturbed juvenile delinquent; or have slept with her husbands best friend the inbred Bubba? This movie is too bad to be believed. So Kiss, take your head out of your butt and stop smoking that funny stuff the next time you review a movie. It was awful! Expand

An excellent performance from Jennifer Aniston who really does show that she can play someone other than Rachel Green. Also a brilliant screenplay and a wonderful underrated performance from Zooey Deschanel as Cheryl, the foul-mouthed Retail Rodeo employee.

Carly H the only one emotionally retarded has to be you. There wasn't one redeeming feature about this trash. Everyone in the theater walked out shaking their heads in disbelief. How could the "so-called" good girl have ever married her husband or traded him in for a juvenile wack-job who is ten years her junior that lives with Mommy and Daddy? Carly you gave this movie a perfect score? You are in serious need of some professional counseling if you honestly think this was? Your punishment is to see a double feature of the Royal Tennenbaums and Gosford Park. Expand

This movie was a total joke. The worst film I have seen so far this year, beating Collateral Damage by a mile. This movie advertises its wretchedness in the first frame by introducing a "poetic" voice-over that ultimately amounts to nothing. The characters' actions are totally illogical, the key conflict is resolved with a ......., and Jenifer Anniston's "old and tired" makeup is atrocious; even worse than Michelle Pfiffer's in Frankie and Johnny. Add to this awful dialogue, one-dimensional characters, and the unending sense that this is a Jenifer Anniston star vehicle/vanity production instead of an actual movie and you have a disaster. Avoid this bomb at all costs! Expand

Mostly over-rated performances (Aniston, John C. Reilly), along with some really bad ones. Only Jake Gyllenhaal is really all that impressive - he's getting good at those mis-understood-youth roles (see Donnie Darko). Film doesn't really seem to have anything to say or do or leave you with either - all of which left me feeling very unsatisfied. Just see something else instead.

Smart and just edgy enough to forgive some of the stereotyping. As a "good girl" who manages to eat her cake and have it, too, and emerge relatively unscathed while everyone else around her feels the aftershocks, Aniston really impresses. Supporting cast is terrific, especially Deschanel and Reilly. Nelson and Gyllenhaal need to find new shticks, I think, but they still manage to imbue their typical roles with urgency and pathos. A sad, cutting, and altogether memorable film. Expand

After watching this my first reaction was to think, what was the point of this movie? i mean it doesnt really go anywhere. To me it was like if the writer sat down one day and thought i know ill write something depressing, which is great i suppose but i cant really see any point in it. The acting in it was ok, the dialogue was ok and thats about it. The only thing that took me by surprise is the fact that this film is described as a romance, which is strange as this film is about as romantic as a car crash. Expand

Droll portrait of small town life is never condescending. Picture always has the time to flesh out each of its characters, no matter how bizarre their behavior.

Provocative and well-observed...to a point. The problem I had was with some of the motivations of Aniston's character. For the first half she is portrayed as a very low-key woman who has grown accustomed to her mundane life.. but when things start to spiral out of control she handles everything a bit too cooly. Quick decisions are reached without much thought or feelings of remorse... it just seems like her character was able to navigate out of her messes too easily. Expand

Has THE most over-rated acting performance ever. I mean, they had a "Rachel" coach. Hold it, stop tape, Jennifer is acting like Rachel again, which is just Jennifer being herself, only with good writers that make her sound as if she has some intelligence and wit of her own! How can a performance be considered good acting when they have to hire someone to tell you to keep doing it differently? Too funny. Expand

Very hokey flick featuring southerners as simpletons and New Yorker's as sophisticated snobs. Of course, Reese chooses the southern fried brains of the dimwits from which she had tried to escape? It is a stupid sterotype film that is insulting to all Americans. Reese is simply delightful and deserves a better stage.

I grew up in a small town and can relate to these characters. Although a bit satirical at times, the script shows these folks in an accurate light - with most accepting their lives as is, while others yearn for more of what is out there. The only part hard to believe was Aniston's marriage. It's never really explored why she married this lunk - which is one of the main reasons she seeks something else. But the film moves well and Aniston finally shows that she can be more than just a "Friend." She picked a great launching pad for her film career. Expand

This movie is an unadulterated turkey. The movie draws its audience from Jennifer Aniston's star power; but she is completely miscast here. Her acting is okay. Her husband is an ugly dimwit painter. It is impossible to believe that she would ever sleep with him, no less marry him. Bubba, his best friend, appears as a dimwit borne between two cousins. And the jerk that she falls for is a boy eight years her junior and in serious need of shock therapy as he is fruit loops. The rest of the characters are also dysfunctional without any audience appeal. This flick is a depressing total bomb. You have been warned. Expand

I guess I'm the fence straddler for this movie, after reading the vicious back and forth on this film so far. First of all, this is probably the most depressing picture I've seen since "Dancer in the Dark". That's not to say that I didn't think it was a good picture, but it is a hard one to watch. Aniston is tremendous, but I liked her in some of her earlier films, and No, I don't watch "Friends". Also, Zooey Deschanel steals just about every scene she's in. Not sure where the humor was in this film though, unless we're supposed to laugh at hayseeds, which I didn't think was appropriate in this movie. I want to give this movie a 6.5, because it borders on a good film, but I can't give this a 7. Expand

I lived and worked in small Texas towns for 20 years, had affairs with women like the heroine. The characters' actions are fairly realistic but character portrayal is way way off. Justine should be cute, saucy and slutty. Her husband should an electronics/communications technician with much more intelligence, trade-school training and assurance there are high-paying jobs in Atlanta or Dallas. Bubba should have been a redneck Bubba, not a poetic sensitive guy. Her first husband was a carefree plumber in Lubbock. No future there. Her second husband was a fuel-pump jockey billed as an Electronics Technician. She was sexy but also cold and heartbreaking .. without caring. She was a Jesus-freak. None of these people, at the truck stop and convenience store, were depressed like characters in the movie. They had foolish expectations for the future. The Texas accents were close but not perfect. That doesn't bother me so much as inaccurate character portrayals. Expand

Terribly depressing movie about a complete town of misfits in Texas. Would anyone believe that J A would be married for 7 years to an ugly pot smoking idiot, hate her job, have an affair with an emotionally disturbed juvenile delinquent 8 yrs. her junior, or sleep with her husband's best friend who is a complete idiot? This is supposed to be a comedy? C'mon, the only funny thing about this movie is that it was made and that some of you liked it? Avoid at all costs! Expand

Actually, Jennifer Aniston's transformation from "friend" to potential A-list actress began with "Rock Star". Rent it. You'll see. In "The Good Girl", her Retail Rodeo uniform seems to suck all the Rachel out of her soul. The expressions Aniston wears during an unwanted encounter with a blackmailer, and at a sperm bank with her husband, are priceless. The team from "Chuck and Buck" for the most part has delivered a nice balance of humor and angst without making fun, or making us feel sorry for these ordinary people. "The Good Girl" is a "feel-ennui" movie that will make you feel good. Expand

The cast of this thim film was sloppily put together and just did not seem to mesh. Aniston showed us another, deeper side of her acting but her performance alone could not save this movie. The characters are never fully developed and you don't really ever understand them, or even want to for that matter. Bad ending, bad movie.

Depression and feeling "trapped" (somewhat the same thing) can cause you to make poor decisions, especially related to how one might "escape" and feel more hopeful, and that is one point that is made subtly in this flick. For the most part, those who are criticizing the illogical and indefensible choices made by Justine should reconsider that aspect of the film. Take it from me, based on family experience I know first-hand. There are some aspects to the story that I still cannot buy into completely, but those may be nothing more than the directors' pushing the edge of the satire envelope. I agree with the comments below regarding the overly stereotyped small town characters... too convenient, in a way. So, I give this movie a 6 or 7; since its rating has been pulled down by some rather reactionary (and apparently knee-jerk "0" ratings)... here is my 8; a small compensation for some unjustified negativity in other reviews. I found the acting in this movie to be its high point. Aniston has made a good break away from her Rachael role and has proven to be a more than adaptable actress. However, the real high point was Gyllenhaal's portrayal of the troubled youth which he seems great at doing, I look forward to seeing more of him in the future. The plot was decent although not groundbreaking but a worthwhile watch I feel. Expand

The movie was very well-done, and i think the acting was excellent. The performances from Anniston, Reilly, Gyllenhaal, Nelson, etc...were all believable and deep. They all appeared to be simple small-towners on the outside, but there was definitely something more to them that is subtly revealed within the plot. The film is very funny at parts, especially Zooey Deschanel's character who is simply hilarious. I think a lot of people have a problem with the way that the Justine character was portrayed in a somewhat heroic light despite her horible actions. I agree and disagree. Justine was not a hero in a sense that she finally woke up and realized the situtation she had trapped herself into, or that she tried to escape this existance. She made many terrible mistakes throughout the film, none of which should really be praised, but i think this movie should be taken in a more naturalistic view. Justine is bound by fate just like everyone else. She will never escape her situation even by running away with a younger man. This realization is depressing, but what she can do with her life is to make the best of what she's given. I think that Justine makes this realization in the end and I think that this makes her a hero in her own way. The idea is still depressing, but more positive. The Good Girl is a postively depressing look at negative determanism (haha) but also a very enjoyable film! Expand

Don't be misled by the title. This is a very depressing film with unsympathetic characters living in a small Texas town. The casting is simply atrocious. Jennifer Aniston dresses down as she is unbelievable in her role that she can be part of these misfits. The only thing the movie proved is that she is truly a capable actrress. Too bad she did not have more of a vehicle to work with. Simply a terrible movie. Expand

[Potential Spoilers Omitted] I think most people will agree that this movie depicted the mundane lives of some fairly unsuccessful people. Great! . . but what else? It was very humorous, and the scattered jokes provided much needed comic relief. But what else? What is this movie really trying to say? I don't see anything. I started out feeling bad for Justine, and was rooting for her as the heroine of the film. But wait. . . it turns out that about half way through the movie, she has made several unexcusable, heart-wrenching decisions. After her accepteptance of blackmail "rape" by Bubba I could no longer root for Justine. In fact, I didn't even like her or in the least feel bad for her. Justine's problems were her own doing, and she hadn't done anything to try and solve them. So who do I root for? Who provides the substance for this film? No one. . . there isn't a single hero or heroine. Does the baby make up for the rest of her depressing mistakes? Has she redeemed herself by starting a family that otherwise wasn't ever going to start? No! ....... Maybe the baby gives her a chance to start over? Not at all! There is so little character development that it isn't clear if her feelings have changed for her husband. ..... To me, the baby only accentuated the point that her life wasn't going anywhere and that she wasn't going to do anything to change it. I'm not trying to say that movies shouldn't be depressing, but movies should contain substance. Overall, this movie provided me with 93 minutes in which I watched a person singlehandedly screw up their whole life (two lives if you count Tom) by making completely immoral and generally poor decisions. What does this tell us? You can really screw up your life by making bad decisions? I think we already knew that. . . It sucks to not have an education? I think we already knew that too. . . We should think about the consequences of our actions? . . . ohhhh really? Expand

Surprisingly edgy, with interesting, fulfilled characters and performances, especially from Jennifer Aniston and John C. Reilly. Warning: this is a subtle movie that moves rather slowly, without a definite hero or obvious moral, so probably it's not for Jennifer-Aniston-is-hot crowd. If you're looking for that, watch Friends reruns instead.

  1. A smart, arch and rather cold-blooded comedy.
  2. There's humor in it, and sadness, and an acid-tinged humor that is miles away from the branded levity of "Friends." More power to Aniston for feeling the need to try something different, and then doing it -- well.
  3. Aniston and Reilly give the best of many excellent performances. A few plotty scenes aside, this quietly directed drama paints a sensitive, sympathetic portrait of modern malaise, and has a smart sense of humor as a bonus.
