Honestly if you were to ask me what's my personal favorite movie, I'd have to say "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly". While the film does have a few lighthearted or comedic moments it's by enlarge extremely serious and deals with war in an admirably restrained manner. Sergio captures the epicness and chaos of the old west but it doesn't choke itself to death on atmosphere. While I thought Leones own "Once upon a time in America" was his best work this comes in an extremely close second. It really does nothing wrong. One of the few films I could honestly call perfection Expand

A masterpiece, not only for lovers of the good old-fashioned westerns, but for anyone who loves cinema in its broadest sense. Fabulous interpretation, visually brutal and is one of those movies that grabs us to the screen in despair for having no idea of how the movie will end. Eastwood at his best.

As long as I live, I will never understand the appeal of this cheap spaghetti western. It's overacted, way too melodramatic. Indeed it does have a great score, but otherwise is an unimpressive western. It's just a cheap Italian made garbage.

You have to like westerns to love this movie, and it is very good along those lines.... I honestly don't know what could be done to make it any better.

Quite simply a masterpiece. A visual feast from start to finish and truly operatic score combine to make a stunning movie. More than a Western, it actually centres on the civil war which seems to echo the Vietnam of Apocalypse Now.

This movie defines the western. Black humor and all. The direction, soundtrack, actors, and on and on, perfection. Very few westerns, let alone action films have anywhere near this brillance.

Perfect. Riveting. Suspenseful, exciting and gloriously shot. The music is superb (as is par for the course for Ennio Morricone.) The black humour is such a perfect touch to an already fabulous movie. One of my top ten all time favorites.

I really dislike spaghetti Westerns. If forced to either watch one of them or a Hell's Angels biker movie, I'd be forced to flip a coin. The exceptions, of course, are Sergio Leone's classics: if Once Upon a Time in the West is his masterpiece, this is not only his most entertaining movie but one of the most purely enjoyable flicks of ANY genre. It's a simply-plotted but richly detailed, visually ravishing extremely funny and gloriously inpredictable (no matter how many times you've seen it) cat-and-mouse treasure hunt tale, yet it also manages to incorporate Civil War footage that equals or exceeds Birth of a Nation, Gone With the Wind, Glory and Cold Mountain in raw cinematic power. (the bit in which Clint Eastwood shares his trademark cigar with a dying soldier is unexpected and poignant.) Eastwood, following Steve McQueen's dictum that the star should let the supporting players do most of the talking, may be "The Good", but it's most likely that Eli Wallach (as "The Ugly") will steal most of your attention and sympathy. He's often as ruthless as nominal villain Lee Van Cleef ("The Bad"), and most of his troubles are the results of his incredibly dumb moves (although he's also capable of some real brilliance at times; remember how he escaped being chained to a dead man?) but his frustrations are wonderfully human and identifiable; let's face it, most of us are Tuco far more often than we're Blondie. That's why I'm firmly convinced that, along with John ford, Anthony Mann and Erich von Stroheim, Leone's major cinematic influences would have to include...Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng!! After all, what is much of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly but a three hour Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoon--except that in the Looney Tunes shorts Daffy doesn't especially want to torture Bugs; he just wants Elmer to think it's rabbit season and blow his brains out! Fellini's influence is probably to blame for this unpolished gothic western. Flails from one offbeat device to another, like a jaywalker dodging taxicabs. But in the end is completely in sync with itself. Does not lose its epic qualities over time. The Ben-Hur of spaghetti westerns.

Boasting one of the great scores of all time and the very soul of all Westerns, this movie is a true masterpiece. It's uncompromising, and quite happy to point out to you that it's not sorry for anything it does. All three of its main characters are engaging, just twisted enough to make you wonder just which one is "The Good," and keep you going.

"Compelling story, memorable performances, breathtaking landscapes, and a haunting score". The good, the bad and the ugly is not only the definitive western, but also and unquestionably one of the greatest movies of all times! Maybe the most simple and perfect analogy of real life ever created!

A true cinematic marvel - undoubtedly the best representative of it's genre, surpassing even that other heavyweight "The Searchers". Leone (with Morricone's phenomenal score) weaves a stunningy beautiful yet desperately sad tapestry of a west torn by civil war. The actions of our leading trio are ant-like in this scale, but this contrast drew me in, and the ruthless and brutality portrayted somehow gains reason. Exquisite piece of film - just watch with fresh eyes, and ignore pop culture's never-ending parody and reference to this Italian-made brilliance. Collapse

A crazyass movie made by infantile minds yet the basic western formula, as deliriously choreographed by Leone, rapturously scored by Morricone, and stylishly momumentalized by the presence of Eastwood, Cleef, and Wallach, makes for one of the most inspired, original, outrageous action movies ever. Even the silly things become endearing with repeated viewings. Even crudities--such as poor dubbing of Italian actors--add to the general mad atmosphere of this far-out surreal comic Western. It's beyond analysis and criticism. The title says it all. It's good, bad, and ugly... but also very great. Expand

There are a lot of things you have to overlook in this movie------ the weird accents and strange sound generally, the American Civil War setting "al Italiano", as well as the rather leisurely buildup to a somewhat leisurely denoument. But the movie is so good, so beautifully framed and so chillingly acted by the three main characters, that these flaws eventually just become additional style.

The best of the Italian westerns -- the most memorable score by far -- and the best climax of any western I've ever seen. I would rank this movie very similar to the Outlaw Josie Wales, but not above it, mainly because Blondie has no past, even if he does have a heart.

Probably the most all-round film there is, never mind in just the Westerns! Everything fits in with the larger scheme, especially the civil war backdrop to the journey of Blondie and Tuco, which splits their own selfish journey from America's personal revolution. Alongside Leone's other work this takes the finest parts from each, but this was a role Eastwood was born to perform as our ever-so-cool anti-hero who we would all want to be.
The infamous 'Dance of Death' is a perfect way to close the open-ended trilogy, as are some ideas carried over into both 'Once Upon A Time(s)...', but the double-crossing, almost twisted-romance between Tuco and Blondie is the central beat of the film, with van Cleef showing us what Blondie could have been on the other side of the law. Pretty much the complete film, if you ask me.

In my opinion the ratings for this film are just right. The film is one of the best, if no the best, performance that he has done. It is one of few films in a franchise to not only match previous films but also out rank them and become greater then the previous. The film shows the good, the bad and the ugly on their quests to earn money in the world of the wild west. If you enjoy gripping action scenes the build tension and suspense mixed with bits of humour this is a film that must be watched. Expand

This ends the trilogy so even thought the otther 2 films also have a high standard this movie is probably the best of the three. Its well worth spending the time to watch it,

Though ordained from the beginning, the three-way showdown that climaxes the film is tense and thoroughly astonishing.
  2. An improbable masterpiece -- a bizarre mixture of grandly operatic visuals, grim brutality and sordid violence that keeps wrenching you from one extreme to the other.
  3. All told, and in giant widescreen, it's only blood-red adolescent fun, but it blooms like Douglas Sirk with a Gatling gun compared to the teenage demographic's current fare. Matrix, schmatrix: This is the season's supreme party movie.
