Her parents, Henry and Joan, were happy and prosperous. She was elected president of her class. Her grades were perfect, her clothes were perfect, her friends were perfect – and she had a crush on the perfect boy. Her life was every girl’s dream – until the day reality crashed Whitney’s party. Her father loses his job, and with it, his family’s financial security. Forced to relocate to her grandparents’ abandoned farm far away from
civilization, Whitney Brown suddenly becomes the unluckiest girl on the planet. Isolated and unhappy, Whitney is cut off from everyone and everything, unable to stay in contact with her former life and its trappings. Then, on the farm, she meets a horse named Odd Job Bob. And her life – as well as his – would never be the same. (Arc Entertainment)

This simplistic story of bucolic redemption has few pretensions to depth, ambiguity or realism, relying on its name cast, sprightly lead and a helluva horse to attract family audiences.

The film, both in scope and tone, has a downsized vibe that would have made it a much better fit on an ABC Family than in a movie theater.

By turns pleasant and preposterous, The Greening of Whitney Brown is a reverse Cinderella tale for tweens.

Content to be a typical piece of tween rural-versus-urban fluff from the old Hannah Montana: The Movie mold. Such lazy complacency is almost enough to make you see red.

This is intended as one of those kid's comeuppance stories, in which a new maturity is won through contact with salt-of-the-earth types and honest labor but is done with an almost total lack of charm.

Bright spots in The Greening of Whitney Brown are Bob the horse, a Gypsy Vanner who teaches Whitney about friendship and her rancher grandpa (Kris Kristofferson), who gets the Philly princess mucking out stalls.

Though this family film is slick and well-intentioned, it comes off as shallow as a prom committee meeting.
