Sure, an "old fashioned" musical. What's wrong with that? It is fun and it is entertaining. Likeable characters. Smile lasts for days after viewing. An "appreciation" of NY life and Indian culture helps. Considering other films at the box office right now - this is a GEM!

This movie aspires to alot: A musical sex-comedy blending Indian and American cultures, and you throw in Heather Graham and Marisa Tomei and you have a winner, right? Um, no. A really dumb screenplay and unconvincing performances by the rest of the cast turns the great premise into a huge waste of time and talent.

Light and fluffy, this film doesn't tax any senses overly hard but instead it tickles them all in an oddly pleasant way. Lots of fun with the music/dance sequences, a straightforward, appealing script, and good performances from the leads. It's the perfect way to get a mental and spiritual lift if you are having an otherwise drab weekend afternoon.

A fish out of water comedy which borrows heavily from Boogie Nights, Bollywood Musicals, and just about every other comedy before it. While there are several amusing moments, there are equally many long stretches that are painful to watch.

Very funny... a big surprise. The Guru mixes Hollywood romantic comedy with intelligent satire a la Christopher Guest to make a dizzying, funny and altogether likable farce that leaves you dancing in the aisles. A great rental.

It may have the melody, visage and basics of a Bollywood biggie, but truth be told, The Guru, despite it’s zest and lure, gives the far-off genus a bad wrap. [3 February 2003, p.98]

As a dirtier Deepak, Mistry is blankly sweet, suitable for his role as Subcontinental Rorschach.

A film that tries constantly to amuse, but succeeds only fitfully.
