The Ice Road further cements Liam Neeson’s reputation as the only action star in the 60-70 age bracket worth his salt.
A predictable, semi-shameless, yet not-unsatisfying action drama.

The question is, does the viewer want an exciting Liam Neeson action thriller or not? The other question is, have we ever seen such a movie set on the ice roads near the Arctic Circle? Neeson does deliver a particular set of skills, in this case dangerous big-rig driving, and has to fight for his life along the way, together with his Iraq-vet brother and a drop-dead gorgeous Cherokee girl. Only the coda is predictable, but the action isn't, and it goes beyond mere hand-to-hand combat.

Ultimately, The Ice Road veers uneasily between immersive tension and a variety of you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me howlers on the level of both plot and dialogue.
The film lacks slam-bang, signature action sequences that would make it more memorable.
While The Ice Road might not be quite as cut-and-paste as some of the others (there’s less revenge-taking, skill-listing and name-taking than usual), it’s still familiar enough for it to feel like we’ve seen him do this exact thing before.
As any Neeson watcher will tell you, you don’t mess with his action characters once their dander is up. Sadly, Neeson’s dander is no match for a hackneyed plot, poorly visualized stunts and characters whose behavior can defy common sense.
The Ice Road is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.
After a mine accident, a trucker with his brother as mechanics jumps in as an emergency transport to get rescue equipment to its destination. Meanwhile, they are sabotaged because the mine operator has done something crooked and among the victims are the witnesses.

THE ICE ROAD never tries to be more than what it is, a by the numbers disaster/race-against-time thriller, and the flick succeeds because of this. Liam Neeson is there with his unstoppable screen power and he helps gloss over the movie's rough edges. Can never go wrong with Liam Neeson.
