The Identical evangelizes and entertains with sincere mediocrity. If the style is unremarkably mainstream, the message is theologically murky.
It's stocked with clichés, but they're arranged in such weird ways that the end result is both predictable and certifiable. If only any of it actually went somewhere.

I liked it! Ray has a sermon where he honors Israel and he explains how God loves the Jews.
It serves it's purpose and it has a message. Don't be so quick to criticize something that is intrinsically good.

One positive thing about The Identical is that it will make you want to bust out Elvis Presley's early Sun and RCA recordings, songs like "That's All Right," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," "My Baby Left Me," or "Good Rockin'" just to remind you that no, it didn't happen the way it did in The Identical. Thank goodness.
Even allowing The Identical its premise, the reframing of the Elvis myth as a wholesome example of following God’s plan is not as inspirational as the film seems to believe. Rock fantasies are rarely this milquetoast.
Playing the title role as well as the Dream role, real-life Elvis tribute artist Blake Rayne is more convincing when he's singing than when he isn't. But he has little to explore beyond bashful smiles.
Elvis Presley made some bad movies, but let's give the King his due: He never made anything as outright awful as The Identical.
The film's so preoccupied with being "inspirational" that it disastrously fails to evoke the allure of rock n' roll, particularly in America in the 1950s, when it represented an erosion of racial and sexual barriers.
It's an OK movie... if you've never seen or heard of Elvis and know nothing about the early days of Rock and Roll.
The casting of a Presley lookalike is unforgivably distracting in what could have been a decent little rock and roll fable.
The music, being central to the plot, is also a major failing. One or two songs hit the right early rock feel - then it goes completely off track.
The biggest musical failure comes during a faux Ed Sullivan show when they trot out a 90s power ballad, (think about how well "That Thing You Do" pegged the sounds of the early 60s then imagine they stuck in some Pearl Jam in the middle). Then, to make matters worse, that song is repeated throughout the rest of the story.
Every time you think you might to buy into the premise of "The Identical" they do something incredibly stupid to remind you that you're watching a poorly rendered facsimile of what might have been a decent movie.

In this peculiar twist on the separated-at-birth scenario, one twin becomes a famous rock star, while the other struggles with his calling…is it God or Rock and Roll? To make it even more bizarre, the man who plays both twins (Blake Rayne in his awful acting debut) is a former Elvis impersonator, who bears an uncanny look and sound to a cartoon version of The King. Why would they use such an obvious Elvis in a story that isn't about Elvis? Ray Liotta, who plays his preacher father, has plumbed the nadir of his career, then you discover that he's Exec Producer…yikes! The script feels like the worst TV movie ever, the pacing is torture and the original songs are banal and obvious. This is the true meaning of a disaster movie. It only earned 2 points for the hilarious period art direction/wardrobe.
