Atlas allows Bowery's genius to retain, in the words of one admirer, "a big bundle of contradictions," not unlike his shocking designs themselves.
It takes almost an hour for The Legend of Leigh Bowery to make a case for Bowery's sort of genius, and in the last third, the movie gives a real sense of what made him him.
An engrossingly detailed if perhaps inevitably enigmatic portrait of the elusive, outrageous provocateur.
The film's most weirdly beautiful moments are its excerpts from Bowery's collaborations with the Michael Clark Dance Company.
In fact, the best an artist like Bowery can hope for is that he'll provide fodder for a documentary this solid.
Some consider Leigh Bowery a visionary performance artist. Others will see a selfindulgent narcissist. You may want to decide for yourself.
At best, this movie functions as a brief companion piece to Boy George's new Broadway show, “Taboo.”
