IlzeS.Aug 6, 20055Movie was almost good. Book is far better.About costumes:"The Phantom Of The Opera" is far better, like costume drama. Music is good, sometimes movie is slow. I hoped for better adaption.

KavehP.Jan 4, 200510'The best' Shakespearean movie I have ever seen. It is truly a shame that just because of lack of advertisment, people don't vote!

[Anonymous]May 15, 200510Beautifuly executed, and bravely dealing with issues of predjudice in a compelling and in my opinion true to the intentions of Shakespeare's work. Fantastic performances from Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and a fun Joseph Fiennes.

DGJan 10, 20050Antisemitic plot should not be celebrated in the twenty-first century, however beautifully rendered.

JamesH.Jan 15, 20052This is a movie that, by virtue of the original play, is disturbingly antii-Semitic. Director Radford could have modified the original version of the story to play to a 21st century audience. We are made to sympathize with Portia and her allies as they strip Shylock of his last shred of dignity. I, for one, was filled with revulsion rather than ethereal amusement as the movie concluded.

PatrickS.Mar 28, 20058A brilliant adaptation of one of Shakespeares most contreversial, yet uneventful plays. Pacino is the fire that creates depth to a rather dull script.

RichardB.Sep 22, 20059This is an extraordinarily difficult play to produce. This production will literally set the bar for the 21st Century. Pacino is unforgettable, the casting is accurate generally, the photography inspired. Stunning.

RoyK.Feb 15, 20057Visually gorgeous -- a fine depiction of Renaissance Venice. Loved the music. Not as wild as most critics about Pacino's performance. Seemed overly internalized.

TracyR.Feb 25, 20055Big problems with tone, perhaps inherent in the source material, but heck if you can't solve them, why make the film? Pacino does as well as he can, but the (as aptly said by another poster) general smugness is offensive.

10The single worst Shakespeare film ever made.
-
Pacino gives a keenly measured performance, leading an excellent British cast through their paces in a richly colorful production that should please selective audiences and adds to the list of major film adaptations of Shakespeare's work.

70Despite a series of disclaimers about the treatment of Jews in the 16th century, there's even less disguising onscreen than onstage that this is an uncomfortably anti-Semitic play and somewhat problematic for contempo audiences.
