Brooke Shields, microfiche, a shout-out to American neo-expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, okay, we get it, "Midnight Meat Train" is neither contemporary, nor self-consciously a period piece of the recent past. We're in the midnight movie world. The set-up is fine. Butcher by day, serial killer by night, Mahogany(Vinnie Jones) is, if anything, a literary villian. Standing in his way of unchecked slaughtering, a vegetarian shutterbug, Leon Kauffman(Bradley Cooper), a photo artist who sees something in a picture that he shouldn't have, like an ersatz Michaelangelo Antoinini protagonist. The cops think he's crazy; his girlfriend Maya(Leslie Bibb), too. This is when "The Midnight Meat Train" takes a wrong turn and gets a little muddled. Gradual changes in Leon's personality suggests that he's undergoing a transformation; for instance, he orders a steak. But why does the tofu fan order a steak? Was it predestined that this law-abiding man stumble upon this secret world? At one point, Mahogany seems to be grooming Leon to take his place, but later in the film, he's trying to kill him. With its allusions to Alfred Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt"(Leon learning about Mahogany's history at the library, Leon throwing Mahogany off the train), Leon becomes the Joseph Cotten character in the Hitchcock film, who learns that "the world is a foul sty", that "the world's a hell". Susan Hoff(Brooke Shields) told Leon to find the city, and boy, did he find more than he bargained for. In the bowels of the city, the vegetarian learns about his true nature. Marred by some bad melodrama between Leon and his weepy girlfriend, and the horror movie cliche of characters putting themselves in harm's way, "The Midnight Meat Train" works as a hyper-real nightmare that doesn't take itself too seriously, and almost overcomes its deficiencies in tone(Leon becomes a maniacal conspiracy theorist mode after one trip to the library) and logic(we only meet one person on the outside who's engaged in the cover-up). This movie fails in most of the significant ways a movie could fail, except perhaps for production value, which isn't bad. The acting is at least mediocre. The script is terrible, though, trying to take itself way more seriously than its late-night B-movie premise warrants.

Certainly not for the squeamish, it's very graphic and violent. The film certainly has style, interesting direction. The cast does well but it's just not my kind of movie.

A fantastic descent into the nature of evil. This film is a dream come true, packed with copious amounts of gore, original kills, some very creative and effective camera work, and a story that, while good in its own right, is simply fantastic for a slasher movie. Vinnie Jones is unnerving as the meticulous butcher, and he should go down as one of the greatest horror villains in a decade. The script can be a bit weak at times, as can character motivation and development, but on the whole it's easy enough to follow, very enjoyable, and drenched with tension. Oh, and gore. Lots and lots of gore. Leon's transformation throughout the movie, even if poorly motivated, is at least very artfully done. Well worth seeing, and a crime to miss at the $1 price tag if you're lucky enough to have one of the 100 theaters nationwide playing this movie near you. Expand

Went to see this based on a mild recommendation in the PodCouch Film podcast...I thought they were right that the film's dramatic arc was pretty weak, but I loved the gore scenes which were IMO why the movie was made in the first place. Good direction, too.

Probably the best horror film in a while. Some of the gore scenes are over the top but definitely original - unlike the majority of Saw type cash-ins. There were some scenes I couldn't watch but some fight scenes made me laugh.

One of the few times I didn't have to lower expectations simply because it was a horror movie. Good adaptation of a classic short story.

Has a few tense moments and some nice film work, but this is a fairly formula slasher flick. I found the story arc a bit difficult to believe, and they could have done a better job of setting up the 'twist' at the end, but if you're a Clive Barker fan, you'll likely enjoy it. Matinee worthy for horror fans, and it will likely do fairly well on DVD.

This film was robbed in the distribution department. What gives? I don't understand why Midnight Meat Train didn't get a proper release in theaters. Relegated to the "midnight movie" in Denver six weeks after it was released? Yes, it's bloody. Yes, it's sick. Yes, it's twisted and unless you've read the short story, I'm guessing this train's end of the line will come as a surprise. Clive Barker is one psychotic fucker, that's for sure. See it on the big screen if you get the chance. Expand

Really great, one of the best adaptation of a Clive Barker's novel. Fun and scary, it's reminds me the Peter Jackson old gore movies.

Makes for an awsome Gorefest collection. As a blood and guts horror film it is perfect, but as an overall I'd probably give it an 8

A novel idea, solid performances, smart direction and a good script. Why Lion's Gate dumped this film is beyond me. If you like creative horror movies, you will enjoy this one.

It's a lot better than Saw and all the other cookie-cutter horror films, and it's not a remake so it gets some kudos for that. The bad? It's like a feature-length episode of the X-Files. Actually, it is a feature-length episode of the X-Files - Tooms to be precise. But it gets extra merit for probably the best death scene I've ever seen, and Vinnie Jones' performance..

This is a great horror/thriller and it's a shame this film didn't get a full release. Instead we get tripe like Saw 5 and that Valentines debacle... This film was fresh, and felt like a true Clive Barker classic. I hope this won't deter him from participating in future films, regardless of what Hollywood execs do like the morons at Lions Gate. So because this film was released more or less, straight to video, I give it higher marks. I highly recommend watching this film! Expand

oK the name itself if the biggest turnoff i've ever seen... How did they decide the name, did they spin a wheel or something. don't even bother. It will make you not want to go on the subway at midnight ever again for no real reason...

Until the end, the storytelling line of this movie is really fabulous; however, flawless and soulless ending disturbs to make an exciting and astonishing horror movie.

Film isn't scary, per se, but it's mostly effective nonetheless, with Cooper capably steering his character from charming young artist to nervous wreck, evoking Ralph Fiennes' more unhinged turns along the way.

Director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) is a bit weak when it comes to storytelling, but there are few who could so enthusiastically stage a butcher fight amid hanging human carcasses in a subway car.
