This movie is amazing...you have to look at it from the perspective of someone like the charcacters in it. It is so beautiful, i agree when i first saw it i thought it was 'Interesting' but i watched it a second and a third and i could have watched it so many more times. It touched me...its so poetical and beautiful...

Bravo Bono! Well done ole man. I enjoyed watching this film because of it's story line and cinematography. I also like the way the characters are so wacky. Each one had a personality worth learning about. Hearing U2's music during the movie is wonderful. I'm a huge U2 fan. Buy the soundtrack and the DVD they are very much worth it. Bono is truly an artist.

This movie was slammed by professional critics who seem to craft reviews based on the same demographics studios use to dumb down popular movies to a level they believe the public is capable of digesting. Million Dollar Hotel, which plays like a 2 hour long nightmarish dream sequence, certainly does not follow that cookie cutter mentality. The movie, set in Los Angeles, was directed by German Wim Wenders and you can tell, because it plays like a European movie ala Cannes. Most of the critical comments about this movie are that it was (a) too long (b) too artsy and (c) utterly pointless. True, MDH is all these things, but I liked it anyway. Just about every element of the movie felt plastic and over the top. The plot, the characters, the backdrop and the cinematography were all overblown akin to a Tim Burtonesque like comic book, but I found that refreshing rather than irritating. Unusual for an art flick, this movie was populated by a star studded cast. Mel Gibson, who plays FBI agent Skinner, seemed completely out of place in this movie. If Mel wants to defy his "lethal" hero good guy stereotype, he needs to stick with fluff movies like "What women want". I enjoyed Jeremy Davies role in Saving Private Ryan and he also nails this part as the village idiot. The stunningly beautiful Milla Jovavich seems miscast in this movie, as well. Whether she likes it or not, she's a supermodel goddess who can't convincingly portray the destitute waif characters she seems to think will be good for her acting career. Alas, I'm in love her, nonetheless. Heh heh. The supporting cast does an acceptable job backing up the main characters but I wish Amanda Plummer, a superior actress, would have gotten a more substantial and less flimsy part. I think those that fit into the Joe Public "short attention span" demographic will most likely not appreciate this film, but if you are looking for something different, this flick is worth the rent. If nothing else, it has a very good soundtrack by Bono and Brian Eno. The special features section of th DVD was poorly constructed in comparison to most other titles. Oh, and Wim Wenders needs to learn how to speak up when narrating bi-logs. Expand

I love art in films...this film has plenty of art but lacks quality. Davies is great! Gibson is great! Jovovich is good. Nothing that special except the ending is great, and the way it is narrated and shot is very well done. Great soundtrack by U2!

To make a movie based on real life you just have to have the flair to grasp facts and the empathy to devour intangible elements of the human mind. i.e. emotions. To make a movie that feels like a dream, on like MDH, you need all of the above plus the desire to invention, to create and to take flight. A route less traveled is what makes MDH unique and beautiful (not to mention its lyrical textuality and stunning visuals), so much so that it is sinful to watch. This is one man's dream, cosmically composed by a team of moviemakers, so let it be and digest the idiosyncratic intimacy. Expand

Wings of Desire and Paris Texas are two of my favourite movies, but this is so bad it make me question the quality of his earlier work. No-one should expect directors of his standard to be consistent or to repeat a winning formula, which makes it even more disappointing to see something so predictable and cliched, like a bad country tune where you can hum the whole tune after the first two bars. No amount of high production values can make up for lack of new ideas. By the way, if you are American and think that maybe you just didn't understand the European humour, you are wrong. It just simply is not funny, not in the least. Expand

This movie is simply incredible. U2's music throughout the film really worked nicely and made the film all that much more lovable. This movie will nearly bring you to tears at the brilliance of it all....the characters are wonderful, each full of mystery...like most of the film. This movie is nothing short of AMAZING.. It will really leave you thinking..and wanting to watch it again..and again! Expand

I always took the phrase "Americans are stupid" as only a stereotype, but after reading the critics reviews, I see they are. Million Dollar Hotel is an amazing movie. It has soul, an amaizing story. After the movie you find yourself in heavy shock, you feel your eyes were opened, you feel that that different kind of people exists, you feel your soul opened up but only after an arrow hit it. It's amaizing. This movie is the only American movie, and I have seen alot, together with Man On the Moon, that i can call a real, good movie. But the American critics? They proved they are so stupid. They didn't like the movie, it's there right. But their arguments! My god, have you read their arguments? "This movie has no explotions". You want explotions? Join Al-Queida. "You understand the point only in the end". Thats the whole beauty!!! Thats what makes it so damn smart. For the whole movie you are glewed to the screen, as if you are in some magic world, a sick, magic world. You understand it only in the end, and the moment you understand it you feel like you are hit in the face by cold whater. Shure you are to smart for that! You need to know right at start who is the bad guy, who is the good guy, and let the bombing start. This movie is for people people with a soul, and with a mind. It's an LA movie so after I have seen it I thought: "How can Americans be stupid, when they make such Amazing movies? Now I know Bono wrote it, but it was shot as an American movie", and then I read the critics, and back to reality. After reading the critics reviews here, i finaly understood what empty people means. I don't often rate movies very high, and I really couldn't care much less if the critics didn't like it. I thought this film was very good mainly because of how the characters were developed. Why, I am not sure, but I think if you like films that are a bit strange (maybe Momento, Magnolia, etc) but at the same time have an almost deep concept to them, you will probably like this movie. I just watched it tonight and liked it very much. Expand

MDH is like a dream; one can never quite describe what feelings it arouses, though emotions are certainly there, or what questions it brings up, though it holds more than one mystery. I don't think it was pointless; I thought it left much to be considered and it should be watched several times in order to drink it all in. Anyone who thought it was pointless, well.. missed the point. This is a movie that, in order to be understood, has to be considered. The answers and your emotions won't be handed to you on a silver platter -- unlike most popular films. Expand

Like watching two corporate executives talk jibberish to each other while switchin out their slacks for women's jeans and axe affect gel for flat iron hair with blonde highlights on the 71st floor of the US Bank Building for no apparent reason at all. It's so seedy.....I'm soooooo intrigued by these people that obvious embody Downtown Los Angeles. Obviously.

Definitely in my top 5 movies. It's the type of album that is exactly like the Smashing Pumpkins' "Adore": greatly misunderstood/underrated. Although Mel Gibson is horrible, the rest of the cast are awesome. And the message of the power of love is so amazing. It really makes you think, like very few movies have.

An uneven film at best. Beautiful cinematography and a rich mood, helped by Bono's score. But the plot is thin and the basic story's not terribly interesting. To make matters worse, a few of the characters (e.g. Tom Tom) are hammed up so much that you occasionally feel embarassed for the actors. Still, there's something about it that sticks with you. This is no Wings of Desire or Paris, Texas, but it's worth watching if you're a Wenders' fan. Expand

Wim Wenders. Good director. Sometimes. When he's not, you know, drunk on his own talent. Like, say, here. It could have been a good film, but Wenders buggers it up completely with the floridity of his direction. It's almost impossible to watch without sighing or wincing every thirty seconds. One point for the Bono connection.

The subtle humor in spots had me chuckling often and offered belly laughs on occasion ~ inspite of its dark side. Definitely not for all but if you can laugh at life ~ see it.

The film has an unabashed romantic tone that's matched by Wenders' usual flair for visual drama.

A mellow dream of a movie that's an acquired taste. It's attractive because of the oblique way that Mr. Wenders ambles through a murder mystery that's stronger on characterization than on plot.
  3. A fantasy, a fairy tale, but its characters and the emotions they elicit become painfully real.
