If you don't expect too much from Hollywood, and who does, then this is an entertaining film which reminded me of the original version of "The Haunting of Hill House" in its clever use of sound to scare the crap out of you. The characters are believable enough, and I think the film achieves a certain depth by focusing on "real" characters rather than the mythical Mothman. The reason so many people were seeing things was probably the result of living too close to the power plant. Or, perhaps their drinking water was contaminared by organophosphates from nearby farms! Just a flippant thought. Expand

I hate it when the studios design these trailers to make them seem so "scary". The only thing that was scary about this film was the fact that it made 14 million. I felt completed disgusted and ripped off by the end of this film.

Despite its visuals, director Pellington (Arlington Road) has a big flaw in this film. He tries to make a psychological thriller and the studio sells the movie as a horror film, so ¿what´s the genre of this?. As a horror film is just adequate, creating a supernatural atmosphere that is right and appropriate. As a psichological thriller, the film loses vibe `cause the characters looks too weird. Pellington´s love for symmetry (check all the scenes with a symmetric kind of view) and style, confuses the story and makes the film a little bit oversaturated (too much filters, camera moves and weird camera angles). The Mothman Prophecies loses impact for its accent in to be diferent from the usual films of the genre. Expand

I hated this movie. Painfully slow Ooga Booga (supernatural nonsense), it reminded me of the disjointed crap I watched as a child in the 70s when I was sick at home from school. Awful.

The Mothman Prophecies is not without flaw, but it's a nice piece of spooky and diverting fun. I enjoyed it and I recommend it. Yes yes, I know many critics have trounced its lack of cohesion and clarity; I have to wonder though what they were expecting from a movie about a Mothman. The camera work and spooky score helped to make this movie suitably creepy. The actors do their narrow characters justice and then some. The Mothman remains indistinct, as he surely must - - to expose him or fully explain him would kill the mood and would also limit the viewer's personal interpretation of him/it. Two issues did almost spoil the mood for me though. Number one, I could have done without the Gere character's last heroic effort, a pointless Harlequin Romance contrivance: silly professional woman endangers herself by doing something pointless, hero performs a thoroughly implausible rescue. Number two: I am irked that the film makers had the gall to claim this movie was "based on actual events". Give me a friggin' break! How stupid do they think people ARE? What it truly IS is an actual event around which they've built a nifty science fiction ditty seeded with the urban legend that is the Mothman. Why could they not have left it at that? All-in-all, a pretty good horror sci-fi nonetheless. But I still can't get over that "based on actual events" tag - - what utter gall. Expand

Finally a "scary"movie that delivers on its promise. This movie has a creepy feel to it almost from beginning to end. Unfortunately, a lot of people compain that things are never fully explained. That's understandable since th true events that its based
on were never fully explained. Sometimes you just have to draw your own conclusions. Deal with it!

This is easily the scariest movie I've seen in my life. Unbelievable, yet something inside me says that it just might be true. What's so cool is that they never quite say exactly WHAT the Mothman is, leaving the viewer to think for themselves. The performance by Richard Gere is superb; others are good, but not outstanding. Awesome camera work and use of the sound and red lights. I recommend you see this movie. Expand

I love horror and suspense, so I watched this movie at my friend's house at 12:30 in the morning in the pitch black. I wasn't scared at all. I acually fell asleep and three of my friends were laughing the whole time. It is a good idea for a movie though which is the only reason I gave it any points at all. It could of been so much better!

The occult contrivances of this movie are baffling and the visual style lacks focus with its flashiness but at the film's core is a genuinely moving story of a man unable to come to terms with the death of his wife. His desperate attempts to solve the mysterious prophecies illustrate his emotional turmoil and agony. Laura Linney, playing a cop, is a soothing presence in the movie. Whatever the movie's faults, Gere's emotional climax near the end is heart ripping, cathartic stuff. Expand

A film that respects the audience's intelligence. The unknown is the scariest film. This is one of the best films ever made.

Good start, tiresome middle, reasonably satisfying end, pretty camera work, stunted script.

This movie scared the (for lack of a better word) absolute crap out of me! It was the most terrifying movie I have seen since "The Others." Even though Richard Gere and Laura Linney totally sucked at there acting, the movie had plenty of twists and turns to make it semi-likable. The movie had all these odd clues that showed the "mothman" was there, but the director and screenwriter were either too lazy, or too stupid to have one of the characters to catch on even though the clues are as plain as day! The whole story was supposed to be "based on actual events," but as the film progressed, the harder it was to believe. To shorten this all up, "The Mothman Prophecies" had no real appeal, the only characteristic that kept this movie alive was the "fear factor." Expand

Easily maintains a creepy atmosphere due to the fact that it never actually shows the "Mothman." But, at times, I was wondering if any more was going to be explained.

Very creepy film. It was legitimately scary. Richard Gere did a great job bringing in the Drama of the whole story without taking away the scary aspect. I was glued to the screen. I didnt want it to end.

worth the rent for sure. As an adult, i was creeped out for a while just walking around my dark house. Let me qualify that by saying that I love scary/horror but they have no residual effect on me. I might be anxious during the movie but when it's over and the lights are on....nothin' there. Not so with mothman...at one point a few nights after watching it, i woke up to a red LED on my clock that in my half-sleep mind, i was sure the mothman's eyes were watching me.... Expand

This film did a brilliant job at creeping me out. It is by no means a jump out of your seat 'Ooo! Loud noise and scary face' sort of horror, but it was the subtlety and suggestion that made it so unsettling. If you're the sort of person who likes to pick apart films and discredits them for anything not based 100% in reality then sure, there's a fair bit to criticise. It's not totally realistic but at the same time it's not so far-fetched that you disregard it straight away. All in all, I thought this was a pretty solid film, good cast, great story, great execution. Definitely worth a watch in my opinion. Expand

  1. It would have made for a cool fictional thriller, but The Mothman Prophecies' attempt to stick to true-life roots paralyzes it from being satisfying. It gives you the tingles all right, but they won't follow you out of the theater.
  2. 60
The creepy set pieces are repetitive and the payoff is rather unsatisfying, even though the prophecies do eventually pan out.
  3. 50
Despite moments of atmospheric tension and a core of compelling mystery, the film feels remote, cold and, oddly, obvious.
