(Emile Hirsch) a miraculous young actor.

Offers an idyllic, comforting surface of tree-shaded lanes and sunshine-dappled fields - but a disturbing tale throbs beneath.
  3. 75
Odd and intense, very well acted, and impossible to dismiss.
  4. Deeply disturbing, but dramatically realized, and the movie marks Burke as a young talent to watch.
  5. Simply photographed and well acted, The Mudge Boy captures "Deliverance"-level disturbing images as it takes an unsentimental approach to its characters.

Despite its chic pedigree, the film projects a shy modesty, a virtue largely attributable to Emile Hirsch's unflashy performance.

A deadly earnest drama tripped up by clumsy plotting and unintentional bursts of humor.

An incredibly well-acted film, depicting the sorrowful tale of a strange young boy, his stern father, and a friendship that gives way to some confusing truths. The narrative runs at a slow pace, but flows well with the pastoral setting; the ending, however, came all too quickly and left me waiting for more. Expand

This unique movie got me thinking about it for days and days after seeing it. Very complex, very sensitive, made me cry with some of the most disturbing scenes and their deep meaning (the wedding dress scene: creepy and damn provoking, yet necessary)... this won't be indifferent to anyone with a heart. Touching story of a seeming misfit who turns out to be the most human of any character portrayed. A figure of innocence and earnestness surrounded by those who have no where else to project their failures, tragedies, and damages. Expand
