Eddie Murphy has a reputation in Hollywood of being hard to work with and his track record since the late 90's hasn't been a good one. It makes it hard to remember just what a comedy genius this guy used to be, and The Nutty Professor is a prime example of that. Nobody else could have pulled off this role and made this film as good as it was. It's always been kind of a stupid story, but Murphy played into that and turned it into something that both kids and adults would find funny. No matter what you think of Eddie Murphy, it is impossible not to laugh during this movie. The Nutty Professor is two hours of fun, and on top of that, it's a refershing kind of comedy that we don't really see much of anymore. Expand

There are nonstop laughs and Eddie Murphy gives great performances for all of the 5 or 6 roles that he takes. The humor is simply spot-on in this comedy.

This is easily one of Eddie's best works and one of the most memorable films he has done thanks to playing that hilarious Klump family (which prompted the sequel). It's a hilarious comedy that works so well because of Eddie, but its also a great concept with a good meaning behind to it also. I disagree with TheNewSpielberg.
I felt this movie was very hilarious, and well executed. Why does my review need to be at least 150 characters long?

And the movie succeeds in two different ways: It's sweet and good-hearted, and then again it's raucous slapstick and bathroom humor. I liked both parts.

Eddie Murphy is funny again. Sadly, he lacks the guts to follow through on the cathartic self-satire that gives the film its distinction.
  3. Murphy is wonderful -- I wouldn't begrudge him an Oscar nomination -- but The Nutty Professor is a mess.
