The dialog is so embarressingly corny that my father and i laughed at scenes that were suppose to be heartbreaking. some of the action scenes were alright looking but we've seen it all before, truly awful.

Boring and underrated movie with SOME good cinematography. Makes me proud NOT to be an American.

Begins well enough but it becomes increasingly silly and shamelessly manipulative.

Another Gibson visit to Vendetta City. We still don't have an honest movie about the American Revolution.

Embarrasingly bad, wildly ahistorical look at the Revolution. Utterly predictable plot, absurdly P.C. characters (Mel's character doesn't actually own slaves, they "just work for him"), and the less said about the "Club Med" scenes the better. A complete disaster.

A film that really brings home how horrible the revolutionary war was. A bit long, but it is very patriotic and makes the foreigners mad so it has to be good!

This was pretty good, we had to watch it for skool, coz we were doing the American Revolution. It does make the British look really mean though, and it was dumb how that mean guy didn't die for like the whole movie. AND I think it's pretty funny how the two main characters are BOTH aussie - yay! - and it's about America (and Britain), haha. OH, and I have to give them credit for making the cannons realistic - like they didn't blow up and stuff. Expand

I think that this movie was awesome. Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger where wonderful actors. They made this movie look so realistic. When all of the cannons blew up and body parts went everywhere that was so Cool! Although I still do believe this movie has a lot of historical meaning to it. Where it show what life was really like during the Revolutinary War and how hard it was to stay safe. NO matter where you were and who you was with! Expand

Stong and sometimes charming. If you like violence, Gibson delivers is quite well when he chops a British officer liek a butcher.

Terrible movie...the best part was the costumes. Virtually plotless, blatantly pandering, and more like the real Mel Gibson than the real American Revolution, shall we say.

The Patriot is a little too long, a little too predictable, a little too ahistorical, and a little too focused on bloody battles, revenge-fueled plot lines, and slow-motion fights to be truly enjoyable. However the excellent performances turned in by all of its actors (especially Jason Isaacs) and it's occasionally enjoyable cinematography make it a watchable yet typical Mel Gibson flick.

Bottom Line: Mel Gibson is a powerful war hero in Roland Emmerich’s most worthwhile picture yet. Appallingly bloody but nevertheless greatly poignant epic stars Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin, a hero in the French and Indian War, but preferring to just be a farmer. He is shocked to find that his son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) will soon enlist to fight in what we now know as the American Revolution, and in protection of his son, Benjamin diffidently returns to fight for freedom from the brutal British. Many who were disappointed with flops such as THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, 10,000 B.C., and 2012 often hope to see better out of director Roland Emmerich. Though this isn’t his typical sci-fi film, THE PATRIOT is an excellent film directed by Emmerich, and this is a true must-see for anyone who was disappointed by the forenamed films. Both Gibson’s and Ledger’s performances in this film were phenomenal. Although there were a few battle scenes in which Mel Gibson seemed as if he was simply hacking away, ever so vengefully, that was truly the fault of the film’s screenwriter. When I first researched the cast for THE PATRIOT, I imagined (for whatever reason) that Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger would portray brothers. As there could be no possibility for Hollywood, at least, to cast such age-differing actors (at the time of this film’s release, Gibson was 44 and Ledger was merely 21), I was surprised; but I was not disappointed, as the two created a believable, cinematic father-son relationship. The musical score for this film, I must say, was spectacular. Composed by John Williams (who is known more for collaborating with director Steven Spielberg than anyone), it is placed very meaningfully in the appropriate scenes, and the feeling is extremely powerful rather than overwhelming. If you’re looking for a war film that is beyond simply decent, I would highly recommend THE PATRIOT. At the Oscars, it was nominated three times (Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound), and the only thing that truly cuts it down from absolute supremacy is its running time–165 minutes in length, as well as an extended edition released with an extra ten minutes. Totally predictable "one man's revenge" melodrama plot. Some outrageous moments that are so hard to swallow, and are obviously designed to tug at the patriotic heart strings of Americans. The dialogue was horribly written and so obviously scripted you could tell even the best of actors were struggling to deliver it convincingly. Almost no attention is paid through the entire movie to fleshing out the characters beyond a bit of their back stories and roles in the film. Heath Ledger is completely wasted in this thing, and Mel Gibson delivers the same bland performance as he does in any other movie; in fact during an ambush scene in the forest, I had trouble telling his character apart from the trees, his performance was that wooden. The movie relies on so painfully obvious set ups, story twists and cringe worthy cliches, that it makes you want to stop the movie so you can go to the bathroom and vomit. A complete disservice to the memory of the Revolutionaries. Congratulations, George Washington, you and your men's cause has been boiled down to a pathetic, cliched, pandering, unconvincing, shocking manipulative excuse for a film. Roland Emerich, stop making movies. You cannot direct. Expand

The cast is solid through out, There is a ton of solid action as well, and the plot is decent but could have been a lot better. I enjoyed watching it.

Trots out more flag-waving wartime cliches than any movie since John Wayne's "The Alamo."
  3. Does benefit from Gibson's charisma...Whether it is quite good enough is another question.
