ViggoS.Jun 7, 20090I always thought that Gerard Butler was straight, but i don't anymore. this movie is so boring, that it would kill a hamster. (In lovely memory of my hamster) the hold story doesn't make any sense.

Sep 30, 20116"The Phantom of the Opera" isn't much of a entertaining movie. The acting isn't good and the story is just obedient to the musical. Its the music that you'll like, just the music.

MichaelD.Jan 30, 20059While not perfect, the score is very well orchestrated. The two male leads were not well cast, but Emmy Rossum does a great job, as well as the Meg Giry character. Will someone tell me why if this is set in Paris, only one character has a French accent?
-
-
DebS.May 13, 200510Wow. Let me tell you, I am a Phantom of the Opera fan already, but this movie was wonderful!! The singing isn't the best, but it's so moving and heartfelt. It's wonderful! I ran out and bought the CD as soon I saw the movie and I bought the DVD the day it came out. This movie is, simply put, Amazing!!!

HarronL.Jan 1, 20059Very Very good. Cleared up a lot of questions on the story line from the theatrical production. Director's deviations made story go very well. Music was outstanding.
-
-
WilliamT.Jan 4, 200510If you believe in critics, please don't go see the movie. You will make room for the people that want to see one of the best movies ever done about a "STORY" about LOVE & PASSION. If you love the music, you will love to see the music again.

StephanieFeb 6, 200510The best film I have ever seen. The cast was brilliant, the music is spectacular, the story is beautiful and heart-breaking. Superb. I haven't seen it 9 times for nothing!

-
DavidKApr 7, 20058I have seen the opera numerous times and I thought this was really good. Emmy and the cast were great! The sets amazing. However, the big mis-cast was the Phantom. He just didn't have the range. Listen to Michael Crawford and you will see what I mean.
-
-
dnMay 1, 20053If you've seen an actual stage production or are familiar with the music you'll be very disappointed. The voices of the actors are nowhere near on par to what you're used to. What a waste of beautiful music.

ScarlettFeb 15, 200610Very good movie with excellent music. The thing I didn't understand - what Christine found about Raoul? Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler were great and Minnie Driver as Charlotta - super.

-
BillH.Dec 23, 20040Boring. Stage show was much better. Butler is THE worst phantom I have ever seen. I wanted my money back
-
-
GingerT.Dec 24, 20040This could not even make it as music video it is that bad. Young teenage girls might find this romantic because of the love triangle. But as a movie it falls flat on its face. No comparison to the tremendous Broadway hit. There is no acting to even comment upon. Hated it.
-
-
NathanielT.Dec 28, 20042Not worth it at all. A bombastic show meets a bombastic director, and the resulting product is almost unbearably "epic". Truthfully, the visuals are adequate at best (too much sound stage work eventually begins to look tacky) and the music is still as awful as ever. Does not help that Gerard Butler's voice is all wrong for the Phantom.
-
-
DougS.Dec 30, 200410An amazing adaptation of a beloved stage work that loses very little in the translation. It's apparently "hip" right now to rag on the film, but I predict that down the road it will become appreciated far more than it is now by the so-called "intelligensia."

-
JohnstonJan 16, 20051This was worse that the American Idol tryouts. William Hung is better than Butler as the Phantom. Neither can hit a note but at least Hung has humanity about him? This was a busy mess with all of the acting lipsynching. And even that did not match up to what was coming out of their mouth. Didn't any of you notice? This was worse than the old Ted Mack amateur hour. Just awful!
-
-
LisaP.Jan 17, 20059I loved the movie! I'm not sure I fully understood the ending. If you can help me with this please email me. Thanks.

KatherineH.Jan 2, 200510A true masterpiece of a movie. Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum are spectacular finds. I've already seen it twice and plan to go a few more! Good job Schumacher and Webber.
-
-
TeeS.Jan 3, 20054Melodramatic. Wishy washy characters. Cheesy 80's guitars and synths. The 4 rating is strictly for costumes and sets.
-
-
BarryS.Jan 3, 200510Movie was spectacular, as was the performance of Emmy Rossum... Movie Soundtrack should be a big seller as well.
-
-
JoeM.Jan 5, 200510I love these idiots that keep calling this film a "video" just because it has music in it. I suppose every movie that has music in it should now be referred to as a "video." Basically it is just another way to toss darts at the movie and Lloyd Webber. But like the Broadway show, the movie will survive the critics' bashing and will triumph!
-
-
AaronVJan 8, 200510Spectacular, the performance of Gerald Butler and Em Rossum were most notable, as they really showed their emotion. Love the story (as I always have) and hope that this film gets its due credit.

DublinFeb 10, 20050Where was Milli Vanillii? The lypsynching was simply awful as it did not even match what was coming out of their mouths. As for Butler as the Phantom, now if could even hold a note. Awful.

-
SteenS.Feb 1, 200510Having seen the stage version 3 times, I was sceptical going in but I was blown away by the result. As good and faithfull an adaptation from stage to screen as You will ever see. Rossum, Butler and Driver are excellent. Oh, and don't mind the critics on this one. They are way off!

-
DianeS.Apr 23, 200510This piece of cinema is myth that resolves for the first time a metaphysical paradox of the redemtion of evil. Shumaker draws the symbolism in every possible, thus enriching the parable in multiple dimensions. The performances are juicy and centered in the characters. Like The Wizard of Oz, we are gripped by a tale of our own soul journey, and we cannot resist the revelation in the mirror.

JaneDoeMay 4, 200510I thought it protrayed well the need that all human beings have to be loved and what can happen to a person when they are deined this love (The Phantom) or lose this love (Christine losing her father) and how people go searching for it.

JamesB.Dec 24, 20049There is little that dosen't work in this lustrous musical property. The cast is radiant, the sets are ravishing, and the music, well......we've known that one for years. Top-notch.

JoanB.Dec 24, 200410The Phantom of the Opera is even better than Chicago. Ignore what some of the critics are saying. Schumacher does a beautiful job coordinating the production and the voices are stellar! A gorgeous spectacle!
-
-
GeorgeC.Dec 24, 200410How it is possible to give this masterpiece a negative review? There's seems to be a different agenda. This is as ravishingly beautiful as the stage play, and oh,..........that Emmy Rossum!
-
-
60The end result, although entertaining and well-crafted, certainly isn't on the same breathtaking scale of, say, Alan Parker's epic "Evita."
-
60What the film most damagingly lacks though is a sense of mystery and danger.
-
40Watching the passionless Phantom, with its geriatric story-framing device, gooey dimestore romanticism and tawdry pop ballads about unrequited yearning, feels akin to dying and waking up in your parents easy-listening-radio hell.
