I don't understand Tom Tykwer. He makes two kinds of movies: rippers (Winter-sleepers, Heaven) and stinkers. this is one of the latter. This has the same adolescent fantasy plot devices as Run, Lola, Run, but that film was more of a festival / music video peice of fun. Franka Potente is great as ever, but this meandering mess cannot be saved.

  1. Lacks the gimmicky hook that made "Run Lola Run" an arthouse hit, but it doesn't lack for ideas, nor for images that will sweep you up in their boldness and have the resonance of dreams.
  2. Throughout, Tykwer reaches for mysteries he has no idea how to evoke, relying instead on his actors' empty stares.
  3. It's dreary and self-indulgent but has its crystalline moments.
