This film is an astonishing distortion of reality. Paid propaganda to gain international support for Chavez's regime. Chavez is far from being a leader who favors the poor. Never before in Venezuela's history have poor people been more humiliated and manipulated to advance an anachronic so-called revolution. The venezuelan opposition is childishly portrayed in this film. In reality it comprises two thirds of the population, including all social classes. Only a 5-year old would believe the film's simplistic argument that the reality of Venezuela is a confrontation of the good (poor) and the bad (rich). Do your own research. Chavez controls all public powers, tore off the constitution to extend his term (that otherwise would be ending by now) and intends to extend it until 2021, and politicized the armed forces - to name only a few of his dictatorial practices-. Yeah it's nice if you were a VIP guest of Chavez while he , as hes done fore the past 4 years , PROPAGANDA with public money. This film is an OFFENSE to the people of Venezuela. Venezuela has 80% poverty , and 70% Venezuelans are going to RECALL him in the comming month. Rich against poor ??????? , the numbers don't seem to think so. What happend April 11th , is not what is shown in this film , come on , these journalist were in the Presidential Palace all the time ........ could they know. Did they know that more than 1 million venezuelans marched to ask Chavez to resign that day ? ,armed with falags and plastic wistles ? It is very easy to " critic" this fil as great when you live in a FREE country. History will talk for itself , do a little reaserch before refering to uor terrible political crisi . You are so wrong . You are invited to Venezuela to find out for yourself , talk to both parts , and then " critic " ......... Expand

This film has been proven to incur in severe faults to production ethics such as misrepresenting reality, ignoring public and notorious facts that would change the general content of the film (such as Chavez's resignation to office as announced on all TV stations on April 11, 2002 by his highest ranked military officer who is currently his Secretary of Domestic Affairs), changing dates, introducing images from other dates, hours and places and situating them during the events of April 11, openly lying when reporting other events, and manipulating images, producing a propaganda oriented document as the famous documentary prepared by Leni Riefenstahl during the Nazi regime some 70 years ago. Nice to see the upper class of Venezuela are working overtime to distort this doc by IRISH film makers. The facts of this doc are verified easily by a simple google search. But in true conservative fashion, a lie repeated a thousand times becomes truth, as seen at the response to this informative doc.

Just a note to say that Tony's "facts" are completly incorrect. During the coup the opposition/media maintained that Chávez had resigned, though no signed document to this effect had yet been produced. The coup-government prevailed upon Chávez’ attorney general Isaias Rodriguez to make a public statement attesting to Chávez’ resignation, to be broadcast live. Rodriguez agreed and began his statement according to plan, with the cameras rolling. Then, abruptly, he changed course and stated clearly to the world that Chávez had not resigned, that he had been kidnapped and that what had, in fact, occurred was a coup. He caught the media channels by surprise, but as soon as they realized what he was saying, every single one of them cut the broadcast in mid transmission, replacing him with cartoons, baseball games, and stunned newscasters forced to improvise explanations for Rodriguez’ sudden departure. As an irish sociology student who has been conducting research into Chavismo and the bolivarian revolution for my thesis, i am disgusted by the ignorant comments made by this person. it is completely untrue that this film is paid propaganda and the dirctors have only recorded what happened. If only other media outlets like CNN had been so objective. Expand

This is a PROPAGANDA movie that shows a twisted and biased version of April 11, 2002 events. It is worthy to watch it under the risk of getting a short vision of an episode of recent venezuelan history. It looks more like a cheap custom-made film than an objetive documentary. It reminds me one nazi era film, made to magnify Hitler, it is the version of the regime leader, posted at overseas theaters using the people money, to deceive the world. Expand

Im a Venezuelan and All I want to tell you is: That information is so manipulated. Chavez is a Dictator, thats why he was removed. the filmakers that made this documentary have sold themselves. I read ebert's review and I almost cried, every single thing you guys think is a lie, for example: "Chavez supporters marching and getting killed", Not TRUE, it was US, the opposition he got shot at by Chavez people. Keep this in mind about the critics of this film: whom do you suppose has access to the Internet, the rich who travel abroad or the poor people in the barrios? Of course the voices we hear here in the rich world will be critical of Chavez--he's our enemy. Go see it for yourself.

Mesmerizing. I am positively shocked at how effective good filmmaking can be at "selling" an idea. However, it seems somebody made a mistake: this film is described as a documentary. While it is true that most of the images presented were not staged, the reality presented to the audience would be described more accurately as "wishful thinking action-adventure." Don't believe everything you see. Expand

A coup d'etat is not democratic. The opposition to Chavez call themselves "democratic." The New York Times calls this opposition "democratic." The AP calls this opposition "democratic." But a coup d'etat is the opposite of democracy. A failed coup d'etat in which the 80% majority, who are poor, rise up and re-install their choice of leader, well, that really says it all. And this movie shows it all. There's nothing left to say, except that the movie works as a nail-biting thriller even if you don't care about politics. The live, real-time coup footage is unbelievable. Expand

Just a couple of facts: 1.- The film neglects to show the magnitude of the opposition march on April 11th and, more importantly, its composition. In this country the majority of the people are racially mixed and there are very few "white" people. By the time of the film's events, surveys say at least 60% of the country was against Chavez, so logically most of them were not white or rich (80% of the country is poor). 2.- OMITTED SCENE: this inexplicably hit the cutting room floor (pacing?): Military General Lucas Rincón stated that night that the president HAD RESIGNED. There are two possibilities: Either this was a lie and the man was one of the conspirators, or it was the truth in which case the whole "Coup d'etat" scenario is invalid. This man was later suspiciously given an important position in Chavez's government. In view of the circumstances, the Supreme Court withdrew the charges of coup against the military men involved. Later, Chavez reformed the whole Court and forced them to reconsider what had already been judged. If you watch the first three minutes of Red Dragon, you'll get the image of a very gentle and intelligent man who appreciates art and dinner parties with his friends. If you keep watching, you get to see who this man really is. The "reality" that is portrayed in "Revolution" is similar to seeing the first few moments of "Dragon" and cutting the rest out. This so-called documentary (it's more like paid propaganda) omits facts that, if the filmmakers really had wanted to be objective, they would NEVER have left out. Please, people, seek the truth and judge for yourselves, don't let a pro-government paid lie be the ultimate truth (Chavez's people spent $ 52 million promoting it and they give it away at embassies for free!). THE PAST IS PRELUDE. Expand

This DOC is a masterpiece! It unflinchingly digs into how the rich of venezuela manipulated, lied, twisted, and murdered their way into a coup of the legally elected President, Hugo Chavez. It becomes very obvious that the rich, who have become rich at the expense of the people's resources, are scared sh*tless of Chavez. The upper class thugs drive in their mercedes and complain how repressed they are under Chavez. They will murder, lie and worse, enlist the CIA's help of overthrowing Chavez. I recommend all to see this as a primer for the 2004 elections. Expand

This is an insult to the common sense and far away from reality!! ? This is a clear message that chavez will do anything to keep the power on his hands, financing this type of movie to promote his government is an example. People who ignored the reality of Venezuela can be misleading for this movie. Unfortunately he is not the right guy to lead a country and create a sustained growth of the economy; it's very sad what has happened in Venezuela and we pray to see our country happy again. Viva los callados! Unlike Tony and Rafael, 80% of Venezuela's poor population can't speak english nor have internet access to participate in this film review turned-into-political discussion. This documantary is not only showing the side the main media never showed, but it also shows the human side of protagonists in both sides. Not to mention that it's filming, production and editing makes a very entertaining, good paced piece. I lve in venezuela and unlike my ignorant compatriotas, I have been IN the barrios (not just near them) and for the first time something IS happening in people's life, for the first time they are begining to have dreams and there light in their eyes -not to mention food on the table thanks to Mision Mercal, Doctors nearby thanks to Mision Barrio Adentro, etc. Expand

Ok, First of all I Live in Venezuela and i see everyday what happens in my country, and its really diferent from what chavez says and from what is shown in this documentary. You dont have to belive on what you saw on this "film" just because it says so here. Do your own research, pick a plane and come to Venezuela. Check te barrios in La Guaira just a few seconds after you get out of the Airport, Watch the kids begging for food in every corner of the citys!. I dont say that Bush is the Devil just because i saw Farenheirth 9/11 , i do my own research, and you should too!. This film is a Poor research about what happened in April 11 2002 giving all the good stuff to chavez and making the local media look like liars. Expand

  1. More effort could have been made to fully flesh out the international perspective on this "people's president," but as a play-by-play look at a modern coup, it's an amazing, insightful film.

Stunning you-are-there account of a grand swindle in the making. Were the coup not such an outrageous and chilling affront to democracy, their documentary would be a gut-busting comedy along the lines of Woody Allen's "Bananas."

The sensation is dizzying, and you may feel relieved -- certainly the filmmakers do -- when Chavez re-enters the picture. There's a feeling of order restored, but the depiction of political free fall has been unnerving.
