  • Starring: Alfonso Santagata, Elisabetta Piccolomini, Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria Cavalli, Valeria De Franciscis
  • Summary: In The Salt of Life, a middle-aged retiree has become invisible to all distaff Romans, regardless of age or relation. He contends with an aristocratic, spendthrift mother; a wife who is more patronizing friend than romantic partner; a daughter with a slacker boyfriend whom he unwillingly befriends; and a wild young neighbor who sees him merely as her dog walker. Watching his “codger” friends snare beautiful younger women on the sun-kissed cobblestones of Trastevere, the man tries his polite, utterly gracious best to generate some kind of extracurricular love life—with both hilarious and poignant results. This being an Italian film, and Gianni being such a hapless, kindhearted aspiring Lothario, make this perhaps the sweetest movie ever made about a guy trying to cheat on his wife.

Rueful, funny and wise, The Salt of Life is a comedy not of errors but of the tiniest of missteps. A warm yet melancholy film of quiet yet inescapable charm, it has a feeling for character and personality that couldn't be more delicious.

Episodically structured and lethargically paced, the new film attempts to convince us that there's something incredibly charming about an old guy who makes a habit of ogling young women. Actually, the whole scenario is pretty creepy.

A dry dream of postmenopausal-male sexual lethargy, this comedy's least musty ideas are among its worst.
