  • Summary: A touching and often wickedly funny portrayal of life on a late Victorian farm in South Africa. (Karoo Horizon Pictures)

  1. Meets its main requirements: it adapts a classic novel in gleaming cinematic form, and it ridicules the foibles of ruthless adults.
  2. As it is, Bustin' Bonaparte is an enjoyable diversion, but with more energy and style it might have been a gem.
  3. Reviewed by: R. Emmet Sweeney

A modest tale intermittently well told.
  4. This adaptation of South African writer Olive Schreiner's cult novel is too cute by far, sapping emotional resonance from a story that was in its original incarnation apparently far darker.
