  1. Egoyan's voice is so clear and loving, his vision so forgiving and his film so intelligent that you come away refreshed.

This is one of the best films of the year, an unflinching lament for the human condition.
  3. Masterpiece is the right word for The Sweet Hereafter. It is extraordinary: a poem of familial pain, a song of broken embraces. [25 December 1997, Tempo, p.1]

A solemn, subtly structured, beautifully acted and ultimately hypnotic movie.

It's the survivors of this tragedy that must make peace with their fate, and the film finally rests with them.
  6. The filmmaker creates schematic, intuitive images that hauntingly crystallize the characters' situations.

For all its mystery and its stylistic finesse, there is something vaguely plodding about The Sweet Hereafter.

Yet Atom Egoyan takes tragedy seriously, with a moving depiction of how tragedy can effect people, any people. The acting is refreshingly human and not forced. The cinematography's long shots convey a calmness that is quickly shattered, and along with the music, juxtaposes with the story of the film and the characters in a way that adds insight into the lives of the characters. An afflicting drama heavily overshadowed. Expand

I have watched the film more than five times and I never fail to be moved, and I have yet to discover much more than very minor stylistic choices. Previously, I found Egoyan's movies to be interesting but self-conscious and arty to the extreme. Here, without sacrificing his creativity, he reveals his exceptional humanity. A must. Expand
