In the person of Cameron Diaz, Mary is an island of sanity, good-natured humanity and genuine sweetness in an ocean of anarchy. Without her presence, There's Something About Mary would be merely sophomoric and tasteless.
A shocking and hilarious triumph.

A romantic comedy that's a hoot in every sense, worth a smidgen of disapproval and a whole lot of helpless laughter...The film works ridiculously well because it never stoops to being mean-spirited or (despite all appearances) authentically inane.
For those who park their sense and sensibility at the 'plex door, there's plenty to enjoy in the performances, the rowdy innocence of the whole thing, the closing sing-along of Build Me Up Buttercup--and the vision of Cameron Diaz in giggly, gangly bloom.
A supremely silly movie, which means that it has moments of boring idiocy mixed with moments of inspired hilarity.
Fitfully amusing and ultimately kind of heartwarming in a twisted sort of way

There's Something About Mary
Multiple characters and their sub plots are the key in here for it thickens the plot and gives enough space and increases the probability of the comic sequences and humor to fit in. There's Something About Mary is fast paced with gripping screenplay and flat out childish humor to rely upon through out the course of it. Cameron is in the centre of it and still feels like she is supporting the other actors like Ben and Matt who are in amazing form with the perfect comic timing. Farrelly Brothers offers enough material in 2 hours and surprisingly an unpredictable script with enough twists to keep investing in it. There's Something About Mary starts off as one of the guilty pleasure movie but turns out quite a reasonable one and a genuine heart with in it.

There's something about a film that despite huge hype, is wickedly average. The late 90's didn't have a whole lot of great comedies, but this one doesn't even make the list of good ones.

I do love comedy, some of my favourite films/shows are comedy based. But I have seen There's Something About Mary three times now, and I didn't like/wasn't engaged by it either time.
I do like how it looks, the film does look striking, I like the soundtrack, there was one joke that I was amused at(the one in the bathroom) and the performances of Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz are good.
However, apart from one joke, I just didn't find There's Something About Mary funny. The Farrelly Brothers I know are notorious for their lack of subtlety, but I was expecting something funnier considering the reputation it has. The script is full of dialogue that is rather juvenile and tasteless and the gags are puerile and fall flat more than they score. I know people will say this is what makes the film funny, I respect that, it's just not my kind of humour, that's all. The premise is simple, I have no problem with that. When the story is this thin and this predictable, I am not so kind. The film feels unevenly paced too, then again it probably has a lot to do with the lack of laughs from my experience, and the characters I don't care about.
Overall, I wanted to like it, but it didn't work for me. Maybe I'll see it again some day and pray that my reaction will be different then. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Please, don't tell me that There's Is Something About Mary is one of the greatest comedies ever made! Personally, I think it is perhaps the worst comedy ever -as bad as Borat-. It was, low-cheap humour, gruesome, basic, and predictable. I am not a snob, and I am not conservative either. I tend to be moderate when I express my views but I can't avoid showing my frustration here for this movie is the antithesis of what I believe is a good comedy. Honestly, do we really think that the crude,gross overuse of sexual imagery, and the mockery that disable people are subject of are fun??? Is that so 'cool' that makes us laugh??? How can a movie based in such negative values and foolish stereotypes, unsympathetic, vulgar characters be good? How can a movie that does lacks wittiness and creativity - creating an scene where your **** is cut by your zip is not 'creativity'- and it is just plain stupid, can be praised that much??? No offence, but that is SAD...REALLY SAD!
