Not a death-penalty polemic at all; rather an effective thriller and character-driven drama. Eastwood reprises the Dirty Harry-esque character, this time as a washed up journalist who also happens to be quite a jerk.

A man is wrongly convicted, and his execution is imminent. It's a discreet forum for one of Hollywood's pet projects, death penalty abolition. Proceeds with the righteousness of the anointed, but the plot is a total contrivance that can only go to one place, and the pace to that place, in order to arrive in the nick of time, makes no admission that capital punishment may be a necessary evil or an effective deterrent. Dead script walking. The convict's life is valuable, his family needs him, we all yearn in the deepest recesses of our hearts for the justice system deliver fairness everytime. That sentiment as presented is worth all the concern, empathy and political will it can evoke. And it's worth a 4. Expand

  1. This is an old-fashioned movie done with wit, grace, smarts and style. [19 March 1999, Friday, p.A]
  2. Eastwood has never seemed less the persona he has built through the decades, the calm yet commanding center of a storm.
  3. Eastwood himself, pushing 70 but cruising women in their early 20s, counts on more goodwill than I can muster. I wasn't bored, but my suspension of disbelief collapsed well before the end.
