I must admit: I am a tad prejudiced--I acted in Jonathan Mostow's first film, Beverly Hills Bodysnatchers, with Vic Tayback and Frank Gorshin--so, I've had the pleasure of seeing Jonathan Mostow work. Despite the lack of material, Jonathan's attitude toward "Beverly Hills Bodysnatchers" was professional. With a good script (U-571), Jonathan proves he is a quality filmmaker. Jonathan is the kind of director who likes to give actors the freedom to expand their characters. It's his confidence in the actors' abilities and his untethered control of each scene that make Jonathan Mostow an outstanding director and make "U-571" believable and compelling. I can watch "U-571" over and over, again, and I recommend everyone add it to their video or DVD collection. Expand

Attempts to be both entertaining & historical - falls into the no-man's land somewhere in between.

Politically incorrect film about American sailors finding the German Enigma Code. What a load of bollocks.

Pretty bad movie. Historically it's a load of crap. Watch "Das Boot". A much MUCH better German U-Boat movie.

Watchable, historically inaccurate American fiction. Does not compare to 'Das But' in drama or claustrophobic tension.

Yet there is so little characterization that when the sub goes down, you may find yourself confused as to which of the supporting cast members lived through the torpedo blast.
  2. 60
    It's straightforwardly entertaining and a genuine nail-biter.
  3. It's a simple pleasure watching an American movie that respects genre, knows its limitations, and genuflects at the memory of Don Siegel in the age of Spielberg.
