Based on the professional critics, one would expect this movie to be a complete turkey. Well, I saw it yesterday evening, and guess what? It was very good. It's a story about two little rich girls, one eight years old and the other in her 20;s but still emotionally eight years old. Both share something in common in that there parents are never around. They have to fend for themselves. At first, the eight year old demonstrates more maturity, but as the movie unfolds, between each other they learn about life and eventually come of age. Little Dakota Fanning of Steven Speilberg TAKEN fame steals the show as she is absolutely brilliant. Add a great soundtrack and the movie will melt your heart. Definitely worth seeing. Expand

Probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The relationship between the two girls was so lacking that I couldn't care about either of them. Molly (Britney Murphy) was such a ditzy slut; I don't even know how guys in the movie can dig her with all that make-up smeared all over her face. And the little girl Ray, is such a snot. In fact, in the end, Molly was just as ditzy as she was in the beginning while Ray was just as cold as she was before. I don't know what it was that somehow made them form a relationship. To top it off, the movie had no funny jokes, and I just wanted it to end. It wanted to be cute, funny, and touching. Boy, it sure did fail at that. Expand

"Uptown Girls" is a product of formula screenwriting, and every development can be seen coming from a mile away. But when Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning trade bitchslaps at Coney Island, it works. When Fanning talks to her ailing father, it works. Even the "About a Boy" finale, godawful in theory, kind of works because Fanning rises above the stupid choreography, and we realize that Murphy's performance isn't the abonimation as reported. "Uptown Girls" is a crass assembly line of cliched plot points with the intent to jerk tears out of the unsophisticated. But Murphy and Fanning squeezed out enough truth from their straitjacketed characters and mechanical scenes to prevent me from laughing at the hokey climax. It's embarassing to like a film like this. It's a terrible movie, but it would have been so much better if it weren't for two things, the characters, and character development. All the characters are easy to hate, with unfunny lines, poorly acted "emotional scenes" and, well, quite frankly they're wooden. However, it would have been better if the characters had gone from dicks and sluts to nice guys and good people, or if you got the hint that any of them had learned something from Ray or Molly, but you don't, which is the worst part of an otherwise bad movie. I am quite shocked by all the negative reviews. This movie touched me and it was lovely to see how a free-spirited girl became serious and responsible after one little girl brought her immature behavior to her attention. This is a wonderful movie and Brittany Murphy is surely missed

The feel-bad movie of the summer.
  2. None of it is handled with any emotional believability or grace. Well-worn phrases and plot developments are repeated here as though the world had never heard of "Cinderella."
  3. It would help if the plot were more than just an outline with a few convenient turns.
