The picture seems to crumble... because the writer and director don't distinguish Loew's fantasies from his actual life... But with Cage in the role we certainly see the delusions at work. This daring kid starts over the top and just keeps going. He's airily amazing. [12 June 1989]
Playing a sleazeball who has stumbled upon an excellent excuse for his bent, Cage holds the movie together as best he can. More important, he nails down his unique approach to acting, managing to be simultaneously stylized and naturalistic. [7 June 1996, p.66]

Still my favourite movie after all these years and many viewings. You see something new each time. The story and performances are so complex you really can't tell where people are actually coming from. I've way too dramatic and scary to be a comedy, way too funny to be a horror drama, it's not wonder a lot of people can't wrap their minds around this movie. Yes you don't ever 'identify' with Cage's character but you do identify with all his victims, something that is pretty rare. Physically he doesn't change thoughout the movie but by the end you can't even believe Lowe is being played by the same actor he has been so transformed by his disease or madness or whatever it is. And it's shot just beautifully. Highly recommended if you want to see something completely different for a change.

Never seen it before, read that Nicolas Cage is like Jerry lewis in France. The only purely comedic role i know of is Raising Arizona, which is amazing. This is considered one of his most unhinged comedic performances and it truly is fantastic, he apparently went as far as to eat 2 giant real **** during filming.

A bold but ultimately doomed effort that will irritate all but cultists of the bizarre and the most rabid fans of Mr. Cage.
Yes, Vampire’s Kiss features one of Nicolas Cage’s most outlandish performances (which is saying something), but it’s also a dismal film, ugly and misogynistic in a particularly 1980s way.
Called upon to blend the fey and the fiendish, the usually fine Cage is reduced to acting like some kind of combination of Dudley Moore and John Carradine. Throughout, though, he seems to be enjoying it; I can't imagine why. [2 June 1989, Friday, p.E]
The film is dominated and destroyed by Mr. Cage's chaotic, self-indulgent performance. He gives Peter the kind of sporadic, exaggerated mannerisms that should never live outside of acting-class exercises.
The bloodsuckers in this thriller may not have much bite, but here's a movie that can -- it's guaranteed -- drain the life out of an audience in minutes.
This movie is amazing in the sense that it takes you back to that late 80s feel. It is definitely worth the title of being a comedy horror, as the scenes with Cage's insanity are hilarious, but some scenes are just quite creepy and make you feel uncomfortable. And all along the goddamn contract was somewhere in the goddamn ****ing files!

Guilty pleasure watching Cage being absolute Cage-iest. His performance only gets more incredible upon multiple viewings. Don't trust the haters
