Aug 8, 201110I disagree with many 'reviewers' and feel that this version is a much more polished movie than the original spanish movie. The soundtrack is amazing and the suspense is real. An amazing achievement by Crowe.
-
JohnY.Jun 9, 200210Wow. A thoughtful, emotional & psychotic mix of: Jacob's Ladder, The Matrix, Total Recall & and a bit of Sixth Sense. Tom Cruise's best.
-
-
JamesG.Jan 1, 20022I can only remember seeing one movie worse than this--"The Blair Witch Project." A total loss except for the close-ups of Penelope.

DeniseB.Jul 4, 200210I am utterly haunted by this movie. It is artistically beautiful, the music fitting and grand, the acting fabulous. I am not sure whether to categorize it as a love, horror, adventure, mystery, sexual/intellectual thriller, and I like that. I am impassioned by its vulgarity, and fell in love with its romance. I have never been a Tom cruise fan until now.

JeffM.Jul 8, 20028Absorbing from start to finish, Cruise really shines in a role that knowlingly plays with his public persona.

MartaMar 29, 20021This movie really disappoited me! It was one of the worst films I have ever watched! The storyline was terrible, and not forgetting the fact of seeing Tom Cruise's usually beautiful face distorted for 99% of the film!

JessieA.Aug 5, 200210This is now my favorite movie! I am absolutely thrilled to see something of substance coming out in theatres. I fell in love with this movie and it professes exactly what I endeavor to show in the novel I'm writing. It is a fascinating testament to the reality of true love, and the power each person has inside themselves to achieve their dreams. Best movie EVER.

Marc-oO.Sep 25, 200310This film is f**king amazing!!! Tom Cruise was great, Penelope Cruise was spell binding and the support was rock solid Jason Lee, Kurt Russell especially. The music was fantastic especially during the final scenes, i have seen this movie at least 5 times and still find it enthralling. Please Hollywood make more movies that make you think!!!

-
UterSep 7, 20039I don't care what the critics say. This was a great movie. The story was deep and thoughtful, and there were some very memorable scenes. Walking through New York Times square in the day time with zero people for example. I would say it's definitely worth owning.

-
MarkF.Sep 9, 20039Eerie, suspenseful, and romantic, filled with a profound sadness I can hardly describe with words, Cameron Crowe paints a picture that is underrated and will haunt me for a long time.

AndrewOOct 26, 200610Superb, highly moving and deep when understood. Vanilla Sky is not a movie to watch just once and requires your full attention. Not everyone will get it; few will appreciate it on the first viewing. This is not a "Tom Cruise" movie, but definately one to watch several times if you enjoy complex movies.

-
DonnaS.Jul 21, 20068I'm still confused by whatever went on in that movie, but I loved it, and I was blown away by the ending which was made even spectacular by Sigur Ros' '"Njosnavelin". This movie toyed a lot with my emotions, and I don't think I can spite Tom Cruise for his role as David Aames, even if I loathe him (Tom) with a passion as of now.

JesseS.May 26, 200210I think the critics should take the opening line seriously. The opening line is open your eyes. To not like this film, they would have had to been asleep before the movie started. Seriously, this movie is not hard to understand. I understood as soon as the end credits started to roll. The critics can be so stupid!
-
-
HelenC.May 28, 200210Fantastic...the music used with the images has been thoughtfully selected and written to create a very powerful combination.

-
D.MigsJun 15, 20020The dullest movie I've seen in years. The dialogue is asinine and will leave you with gapping mouth at the shear self-indulgence of this caca. A kind of Mulholland Drive for the simple minded. I remember the buzz at the release was cheering Tom for braving a disfigured on screen presence. Someone pass the barf bag -- I'm getting sick.
-
-
JenniJun 18, 20021Too hard to follow. I cannot STAND Penelope Cruz and thought Cameron Diaz would be more prominent in the movie than airhead Penelope. Jason Lee is awesome as always though, but the film is just all over the place. Kinda like Traffic. I cannot STAND that.

LuisS.Jul 7, 20029It is a prove of the "spiritual awakening" and evolution that is sufering our planet earth, few years ago was crazy to think about a movie about the real meaning of happiness and/or anti-materialist.

DAXY.Aug 14, 20021This has got to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It tries so hard to be profound that it makes Disney seem deep! You want more meaning in your life?....wake up and don't waste your money on this one.

FrankC.Jan 1, 20036Great Production, Great Acting and an excellent story line. The end is a real dissapointment and ruins what may have been a real classic. I don't understand the point why i ended like that. What a waste.

raVenNov 27, 20038-A surprisingly accurate depiction of the cutthroat ice cream industry. As fascinating as it is fattening. One tip: when you watch this movie, "open your eyes." ...Not for the lactose or psychedelically intolerant.

TylerC.Oct 29, 200310Finally!!!! Finally there is a movie that will make the audience actually think instead of telling them what they should feel. I cannot begin to say how much of a great movie this was. This is not spoon fed happiness but it makes you make a conclusion of 3 possible endings that might have happened. My dreams have never been the same since.

-
StaceyG.Oct 4, 20038People will like this movie or hate it, i liked it. the acting was great and the movie left a powerfull presence in my mind. Jason Lee provided great support acting for Cruise and the other members of the cast put in great efforts that really show and keep the movie alive when youd think it would suck. As i said some will like this movie and some will hate it, nothing in between.

AaronF.May 7, 20039Horribly underated and misunderstood, this film is a testament to what is wrong with Hollywood today. On the other hand, that Crowe has the guts to make this film shows that us artsy weirdos do have a pinch hitter if we ever need him. GOD BLESS CAMERON CROWE! ADDITIONAL NOTE- Why wasn't Cameron Diaz nominated for an Oscar? She was eerily sexy, and psychotic, in this.

JoshFeb 16, 200510One of my top ten films of all time. I loved this film, and believe that critics didn't because it undermined everything they always look for, and still turned out to be an abosolutely amazing movie. Music, performances, plot were spot on. The movie felt as if it came from out of a dream, and I felt in a dream when I watched it. Thank You Cameron Crowe.

ArnoldP.Dec 17, 20013A gallant attempt by a terrific director, out of his element, finally results in a over the top film bore. Who really cares about this narcissistic playboy?, bravely played by Tom Cruise who resorts to smirking for too much of the film. Cameron Diaz does scores high job as a unsavory character. Why even remake this all too recent foreign flick?
-
-
DamianP.Dec 18, 20014It wasn't challenging enough to warrant the word "psychological" or interesting enough to be a thriller. I was very disappointed that my mind wasn't the least bit boggled.
-
-
BobS.Dec 27, 20015Still don't know what it was all about.

-
AaronG.Dec 7, 200210This movie has many psychadelic twists that can only be appreciated by the more intelligent half of the world. In order to appreciate this movie in all senses it deserves, you must see it at least twice. Then the plot can be argued over and someone can take the several interpretations into consideration, and choose the one they think is best suiting for them and the movie.
-
-
TroyP.Apr 27, 20020This movie confuses. All Tom likes to do is have sex in movies. Revolting, and unattractive. What was was the point? The original Spanish version "Open Your Eyes," though foreign, makes a hell of a lot more sense. Cameron Crowe needs to keep good originals alone.

BobbieF.May 29, 200210I thought this movie was incredibly insightful and unique. cameron crowe was astounding and brilliant as usual, and i was even impressed by tom cruise (who usually doesn't do it for me). Overall, i think its one of the most innovative movies i've seen in a long time. Sure beats that teeny bopper crap that's been selling so well these days . . .

LaurieS.Jun 11, 200210Absolutely fantastic! I think about it everyday and dream about it everynight. It Touched me like no other movie has. Vanilla Sky is a MASTERPIECE!!!
-
-
MarkB,Jul 16, 20021Barely watchable. Whatever the message is that this film is trying to get across, it was wasted on me. The film was boring; it was so detached from its characters that I couldn't have cared less about it.
-
-
JulieB.Jul 16, 20023Good: David Helfgott Tilda Swinton The lawyer. Not-So-Good: Penelope Cruz Tom Cruise The ending ruins it all. You realize that you spent the whole movie thinking that the details and plot twists were important when they really didn't matter at all.
-
-
GillianW.Nov 27, 200310My favourite movie of all time!! The first time you watch it - it's confusing and exciting. But watch it a second and a third time and you discover even more layers to the movie and a powerful message. Camron Crowe is a genius.
-
-
FunkymonkeyApr 11, 20036A truly unsettling,mind-bending nightmare of a film. A solipsistic self-realization parallelled with a yearning for an unobtainable other. About as a pleasant as a heart-attack. But not without quality. Definitely worth watching.

KevinV.Aug 22, 20039Fascinating, haunting film that stays with you long afterward. One of Tom Cruise's best performances. The film demands close inspection and/or repeat viewings, and rewards either lavishly. "The little things - there's nothing bigger." Superb soundtrack. Terribly misunderstood, (and not at all an "erotic thriller"), it is one of the very best films of 2001. Brilliant.

ChadS.Dec 27, 20015First, Cameron Crowe made an audience-friendly film with no stars but nobody showed up. Now he follows it up with a stab at art-house with the golden boy of Tinseltown. Next time out, Crowe will get it right and have the commercial and critical success he enjoyed with "Jerry Maguire." Vanilla Sky earns 5 points because the smile on my face hasn't left since his last effort.

38May not emerge as the biggest disaster of the holiday movie season, if only because we haven't yet seen all the other year-end films. But it is a huge high-energy misfire, bringing Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Crowe to earth with a thud.
-
33If Crowe's eyes are open, he seems to have directed most of Vanilla Sky with his mind wide shut.
-
40For all the filmmakers' efforts, this project is something of an artistic albatross. It's a conundrum that doesn't get answered until a sort of help-the-audience Cliffs Notes final scene, in which we learn Everything. But by then, more than a few of us may be wondering, was it all really worth the trouble?
