  1. Smartly directed by Jim Gillespie from a script by various hands, Venom is from Dimension Films and follows its stylish, energetic and darkly amusing horror movie tradition.

Although, in the end, this is basically just a moss-strewn remake of his 1997 hit, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," director Jim Gillespie appears invigorated, sending his capable young cast into a series of nicely staged suspense sequences.
  3. A competent concoction of familiar ingredients, smothered with gothic mood and served up with a generous helping of teenagers: skewered, slashed and stabbed.

Acquits itself well enough. Gratuitously gory and derivative to the core, Venom manages to deliver some effective frights in between large swaths of voodoo gibberish.

Gillespie showed a real knack for '80s-style retro horror with "I Know What You Did," and while a few sequences here have the familiar-but-enjoyable framing and stylization of an old EC horror comic, his material defeats him.
  6. Venom certainly can't be called a good movie, but within its genre it's perfectly palatable.
  7. This misbegotten horror film deserved to go direct to video. Or cable. Or oblivion.
  8. The final showdown between sole survivor and killer is sufficiently well done that you wonder why the rest didn't measure up.

Sadly, the concept of dialogue is totally lost on the makers of Venom, a laughably bad example of teen-scream movies.

Could there be a more inappropriate time to release a cheesy horror movie about evildoing in Louisiana.
  11. A witless, derivative slasher flick.

All hopes for suspense and plot twists are snuffed out about as quickly as the film's black characters.
  13. This insipid take on the teens-in-peril formula, with a snake-bit ghoul chasing kids around the bayou, is truly a fangless task.

Shot as "Backwater" and test-screened as "The Reaper," this film contains a couple of bracingly mean sequences, but it cleaves so closely to the slasher-movie formula that it can't muster up any suspense at all.

If ridiculous, hackneyed, gratuitously violent slasher movies aren't your thing, don't go near Venom with a 10-foot snake pole.

A clichéd and flat out boring film that doesn’t even approach the mediocrity of director Jim Gillespie’s 1997 pic in the same genre, "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
  17. A mud-simple horror trudge set in a swamp colony of Abercrombie models.
  18. Reprises all the tedium of slasher flicks.

Sadly, the death scenes are so unimaginative and the gore is so minimal that you might miss it if you blink.
  20. You'll feel so much better just sending your $9.50 to the Red Cross then catching "I Know What You Did Last Summer" one more time on television.

Venom isn't worth a critic's venom, but a brief condemnation is in order.

How bad was Venom? It was so bad, that they couldn't even get things to jump out and scare you at the right time! It absolutely kills me! The story is fairly original with definite potential, the cast is fairly well known, and the movie was just awful! Why? Take your pick between bad writing, cheap special effects, no character development, and a really stupid ending. I like the whole Louisiana Creole background and the mysterious voodoo religion, that no one believe in anymore, but they just didn't take it anywhere. It's 15 minutes of interesting and an hour and 15 minutes of cheesy slasher bull with typical lines, no eye candy, no comedy, nothing! It was quite boring and the ending just... wow! I don't know if it was rushed or if they just didn't care, but it was so stupid!! Venom could have been a lot more, but it wasn't anything worthwhile. Full Review »

A horror movie explicitly made for fans of the slasher genre who miss what the Halloween and Friday the 13th franchises once were. Here we have an undead, virtually unstoppable killing machine going after a crop of mostly pretty and young actors. It doesn't try to be smart, funny or clever, and so misses where most recent horror movies have failed. Instead, it's a bloody slasher flick. If you like them, pick up Venom. Full Review »

This movie, like The Cave and Cry Wolf, shows why movies may be headed in the wrong directions. I know 14 and 15 year olds who think this movie is amazing. Yes I will agree it is amazing, amazingly bad. Poor direction, plot, suspense and just about everything else. Full Review »
